I am still searching for information regarding the ancestry of my earliest positively-identified CARLOCK ancestor, George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC; m. Rachel LANDERS, 11 Oct 1805, Warren Co., KY; living with son Henry in Montgomery Co., IL, 1860; d. ca. 1862. Furthermore, in my Dec. 27, 1999, posting to the CEARLOCK list, listed below, I inquired about a Henry KERLOCK who was mentioned in Mecklenburg Co., NC, 1787 court minutes in connection with Jacob, Felix, and Elizabeth LANDESS, orphans of Rachel LANDERS's grandfather Christopher LANDESS. (See the following site for a complete transcript of those court minutes: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sweetpoe/llandings/1983/6son83.gif.) Up until this point I had found no other reference to Henry. However, I found a listing today for a Henry CURLOCK living in nearby Rutherford Co., NC, in 1790. In addition to himself, Henry had 3 males under 16 years of age and 5 females living in his household. My records show Felix LANDESS as being born before 1765, and Jacob LANDESS as being born ca. 1768. I do not have an estimated birthdate for Elizabeth LANDESS. Assuming that Felix, Jacob, and Elizabeth were living with Henry CURLOCK/KERLOCK in 1990, this would still leave 1 add! itional male under age 16 and 4 additional females living in the household, probably 1 as his wife and 3 as daughters. This brings up some interesting questions. First, was Henry the father of my direct ancestor, George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC? This seems like a very good possibility. Second, why was Henry awarded money in Oct. 1787 for the orphans of Christopher LANDESS? Was he a blood relative of these children? We do not know the name of Christopher LANDESS's wife. Did Henry take these children into his household? Third, who was Henry KERLOCK/CURLOCK's father? A clue might be found in the fact that Christian GOODNIGHT, probably son of Hans Michael GOODNIGHT who married Christopher LANDESS's daughter Mary as his second, and much younger wife, is listed on the 1790 census for Salisbury District, Mecklenburg Co., NC, as are Frederick and George KERLOCK. (Hans Michael is also believed to be the father of Catherine, wife of Christopher LANDESS's son Henry LANDIS/LANDERS. Henry LANDIS/LANDERS and Catherine were parents of Rachel LANDERS who married my direct ancestor George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK.) As shown on pages 437 and 615 of the book "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, Frederick CARLOCK (s/o David GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans GERLACH) had sons named George, b. 1740, and Frederick, b. 1750. George lived in Mecklenburg Co., NC, and, in addition to his CARLOCK descendants, was ancestor to the CARELOCKs of Mecklenburg Co. and Anson Co., NC. (My maiden name of "CE! ARLOCK" is pronounced like "CARELOCK".) I am not certain whether "Frederick KERLOCK" refers to George's father or brother. It seems very likely that my direct ancestor, George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC, is somehow descended from Frederick, Sr. Was Henry KERLOCK/CURLOCK also a son of Frederick, Sr.? Here are my findings from the 1790 census, and 1800 through 1850 census indexes for North Carolina: I. NORTH CAROLINA, 1790: Edenton District, Gates Co.: GARLOCK, John G. -- age 16 or older, with no family listed. Hello Sue, I appreciate the information you sent on W. B. Carlock, Jr. It does look like it is a very likely match-up. Yesterday, I did make a copy of the letter that you sent Mary on the Carlocks. This is in reply to Carol's ([email protected]) query yesterday titled "W. B. Carlock, Jr.". The W. B. CARLOCK you mention could possibly be Washington B. CARLOCK (s/o Washington B. CARLOCK, William GERLACH/CARLOCK, Johannes GERLACH/CARLOCK, Jurian/George GERLACH/CARLOCK, Coenraad/Conrad GERLACH, Hans GERLACH) who is mentioned on pages 423 and 424 of the book "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929. If the lineage I proposed for Mary in my Dec. 16, 2001, reply to your Dec. 16, 2001, query titled "Delphiat CARLOCK+Rachel DODD", listed below, is correct, then Washington and Mary would be second cousins, once removed. In other words, Mary's great-grandfather Jurian/George GERLACH/CARLOCK would be Washington's gr.-gr.-grandfather. According to my map, Alexandria, OH, where Washington lived, is only a few counties away from Springfield, OH, where Mary lived. Alexandria is east-northeast of Columbus, OH, near Newark, OH, and Springfield is west of Columbus, OH. Mary would have been 47 years older than Washington. Both were born in New Jersey. I find one probable match for Henry in my database, but I do not show that he had a son named Delphiat. The following information comes from pages 422 and 429 of "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929. The listing on page 429 appears under the heading "Fragments of Other Pedigrees of New Jersey". Joy: As you know, page 445 of "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, says that Mary Ann LEE, wife of Abraham CARLOCK, was the daughter of William and Ruth LEE of Virginia, and that "William Lee was a brother of 'Light-Horse Harry' Lee of the Revolution; she was a first cousin of General Robert E. Lee ..." I also have a copy of the book "From Log Cabins to the White House -- A History of the Taylor Family", by Mary TAYLOR BREWER, 1985. A chapter on the LEE family appears on pages 273 - 278. Page 275 says "Henry LEE, Jr. m. Lucy GAINES, had: 'Light Horse Harry' who m. Ann CARTER and had Robert E. LEE." Assuming that all of this information is correct, this seems to say that William was also the son of Henry LEE, Jr., and Lucy GAINES. Please if anyone out there can help me I would be so grateful. My G-G-Grandmother was: RACHAEL E. CARLOCK born 1837 in ILL., married JOHN R. WALLIS 12/23/1858 in Phelps Co. Mo. died 11/14/1904 in Phelps Co. Mo. This is all the information I have on her. Some in the family say the story was she was taken by the Indians and that was all she could remember of her family , others say the facts do not seem to be this story but they have no answer. Thank you for your time and any help, Polly
This is in reply to Carol's ([email protected]) posting today with regard to the ancestry of Mary CARLOCK (d/o Delphiat, Henry), b. Sept. 28, 1800, NJ. Since Conrad migrated to New Jersey, it seems very likely that Delphiat's father Henry is somehow descended from Conrad. Conrad's brother Johann Christian migrated to New York, and his brother David migrated to Virginia. FATHER: Heinrich/Henry GERLACH/CARLOCK (s/o Juriaen/George GERLACH/CARLOCK, Coenraad/Conrad GERLACH, Hans GERLACH) MOTHER: possibly Margretta WANNEMACKER (d/o Adam WANNEMACKER} CHILDREN: 1. Conrath/Conrad CARLOCK, b. June 16, 1764, m. Margreta BANTA. 2. Simon CARLOCK, b. Sept. 10, 1766, m. Maria NAGEL. 3. Henry CARLOCK, b. Dec. 29, 1768, m. Margreta MILLER. 4. Adolf CARLOCK, b. May 17, 1771. 5. George CARLOCK, b. Oct. 1773, m. Elizabeth LOZIER. 6. Matthias CARLOCK, b. Mar. 13, 1779, m. Ruth LUDLOW. Please let me know if you are ever able to make a positive link between the two Henrys. William BOOK, age 17, b. IL, appears two households away from Elizabeth CURLOCK (nee BOOK) and her children on the 1870 census for Jefferson Co., IL. He is listed as a farm laborer living in the household of John and Rebecca HOUSEWORTH. According to the following source, William was Elizabeth's son by her ex-husband David (or Daniel) CURLOCK: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:868523&id=I1950. This source lists the marriage date for "David" and Elizabeth as the same date listed at the following source as the marriage between "Daniel" and Elizabeth: Illinois State Archives, Illinois Statewide Marriage Index 1763 - 1900, (http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/cgi-bin/archives/marriage.s), "Electronic," Vol. 2, Page 42. Also note that the above-mentioned source lists Elizabeth's daughter, listed as Mary CURLOCK in the 1870 census, as Mary Malissa BOOK.
