    1. Re: Family of David CARLOCK of Mecklenburg Co., NC, and Warren Co., KY
    2. Susan Tilleman
    3. This is in reply to the series of messages posted to the CARLOCK list earlier today by Katheryn HADDAD on the topic of the CARLOCK family in Mecklenburg Co., NC, and Warren Co., KY, all of which can be accessed through the following site: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/CARLOCK/2003-04 . I have not yet had a chance to thoroughly analyze the information posted by Katheryn, but did want to make one minor correction. The father of Rachel LANDERS, wife of George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK was Henry LANDERS, not John LANDERS. Rachel did have a brother named John LANDERS who married Mary SATTERFIELD, Sept. 30, 1805, Warren Co., KY. Rachel's father Henry LANDERS is believed to have died in Warren Co., KY, ca. 1800 - 1801. For further information on this family, see the following report which appears on my homepage: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/t/i/l/Susan-E-Tilleman/GENE11-0001.html . Within that report, see Generation No. 10, person 514 Henry LANDIS/LANDERS, person 515 Catherine "Cati" probably GOODNIGHT, and their 13 children. I do agree with Katheryn's assessment that this David CARLOCK is the most likely candidate for the father of my direct ancestor George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC. Another possible candidate for George's father is the Henry CARLOCK who was in Rutherford Co., NC, and Campbell Co., TN. I have the following notes in my database with regard to Henry: "Mecklenburg Co., NC, court minutes, Aug. 4, 1787, "Kerlock & the Landess vs. Joseph Rogers", say that Henry KERLOCK was awarded money "for the orphans of Christopher Landess, deceased, viz Jacob, Felix and Elizabeth". Furthermore, the 1790 federal census for Morgan District, Rutherford Co., NC, shows a listing for a Henry CURLOCK, with 3 free white males under 16, and 5 free white females. Assuming that 2 of the males are Jacob and Felix LANDESS, 1 of the females was his wife, and 1 was Elizabeth LANDESS, this leaves 1 additional male under age 16 and 3 additional females living in the household. This compiler believes that both this Henry CURLOCK/KERLOCK and the David CARLOCK who was in Mecklenburg Co., NC, in 1803, and Warren Co., KY, in 1810, are both possible fathers of George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC. George m. Rachel LANDERS, granddaughter of the above-mentioned Christopher LANDESS. Further research is needed to determine if Henry or his wife was somehow biologically related to Christopher LANDESS or his wife. The surnames of both of the wives are unknown to this compiler at this time. Henry probably migrated to the Powell River Valley of Campbell Co., TN. The first deed recorded in Campbell Co., TN, was from a Thomas CAMPBELL to a Henry CARLOCK for 500 acres. Households for both a Joseph and a James CARLOCK appear in the 1830 census for Campbell Co., TN. Also, a Joseph CARLOCK was elected both Collector of Public Revenue and Sherriff, Dec. 12, 1826, Campbell Co., TN. Furthermore, the Barbara CARLOCK, d/o Henry and Sally CARLOCK, b. 31 Jan. 1805, in the neighboring county of Claiborne Co., TN, was probably this Henry's daughter. If Joseph was Henry's son, this could strengthen the argument for the above-mentioned David CARLOCK being the father of George W. CARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC, instead of Henry. However, there is also a Joseph CARLOCK (s/o Lemuel, Hanchrist, David, according to Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK's book) who roughly fits the description of this Joseph. Furthermore, according to the book "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, Joseph's father Lemuel also had a son named John who migrated to Allen Co., KY, and had descendants who, like the above-mentioned George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC, lived in both Warren Co., KY, and Fayette Co., IL. Some of John's descendants, found in Texas and Oklahoma, also used the spelling 'CEARLOCK' for their surname. It is also possible that Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK's book may contain errors regarding the relationships between Lemuel, Joseph, and John. Additional research in NC, TN, and KY records is needed with regard to al! l of the above-mentioned individuals." Another probable daughter of Henry is the Nancy CARLOCK, b. ca. 1787, who m. George GRIMES, ca. 1802, Campbell Co., TN; d. Mar. 15, 1864, Knoxville, Ray Co., MO; and is bd. in Millville, Ray Co., MO. The names of George's children and grandchildren may provide clues to the names of his parents. George and Rachel are not known to have had a son named David, but they did have a grandson named David (s/o Jacob). They did have a son named Henry, but this is not necessarily significant because, as mentioned above, Rachel's father was also named Henry. George and Rachel are believed to have named two daughters Elizabeth, which was the name of David's wife. George and Rachel are not known to have had a daughter named Sarah or Sallie. Henry's wife was named Sarah and called "Sallie". George and Rachel did name a daughter Catherine, which was the name of Rachel's mother. Susan Cearlock Tilleman List Administrator -----ORIGINAL MESSAGE----- From: "K Haddad" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, April 27, 2003 4:58 AM Subject: Family of David Carlock of Mecklenburg Co., NC, and Warren Co., KY Below is what I have found on the probable family of David Carlock of Mecklenburg Co., NC, and Warren Co., KY. I have listed his two known children and his other probable children based on much indirect evidence: George W. Carlock b.c. 1781, m. Rachael Landers, d.1840-50 prob. Fayette Co., IL Mary H. Carlock b.c. 1784, m. Thomas Heffington Catherine Carlock b.c. 1789, m. James Hendricks Margaret Carlock b. 1789, m. Barnabus Lowe, d. 1840 Jasper Co., TX John D. Carlock b.c. 1795, m. Polly Gibson, lived Missouri *William Vance Carlock b.c. 1797, m. Fannie ?, d.c. 1839 Stoddard Co, MO I have concluded (and it may never be proven) that David Carlock is my William Vance Carlock's father because (1) He sold land in Stoddard Co., MO, to proven son of David, John D. Carlock. (2) He named a son David. Below, now, is my chronology of David Carlock b.c. 1755 NC, m. Elizabeth ?, d.c. 1815 Warren Co., KY: ********************** c. 1789 - Dtr Catherine born (relationship proven on marriage license in Warren Co., KY) c. 1781 - Probable son George born c. 1784 - Probable dtr Mary born c. 1791 - Probable dtr Margaret born 1792: Signed petition against the division of Mecklenburg Co., NC, into more counties. Witness John Simianer. Proven April 1796. [Citation: "Cabarrus Co., NC, Court of Common Pleas 1793-1787 and Deed Books 1793-1801", pg. 54] David seemed to be a merchant and/or craftsman, which may account for his sometimes not owning and being taxed for land later on; he could have rented his shop in town. (See 1798 below) c. 1797: Probable son William Vance born 1798: David Kerlock was on pg. 40 of Captain Joseph Smith's Co. tax list with no acreage and one white poll. 1. John Carlock's birth year
    2. K Haddad
    3. Well, what I just said about John Carlock's birth year being 1770 instead of 1772 doesn't make sense. He was already in his 40s by this time. I got it from some documentation, but don't remember. So forget I said it! Katheryn __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. 1. John Carlock of KY (not John D. Carlock)
    2. K Haddad
    3. I am trying to put together a family group sheet for John Carlock who often appeared in the same Simpson Co., KY, tax list as John D. Carlock, proven son of David Carlock of Warren/Simpson Co., KY. Although "the book" says he is the son of Lemuel Carlock of VA, it is speculation. Someone told me that they have something in writing that he came with his uncle David to KY. What was the source of that statement? While in NC recently, I saw that many of the Carlocks did not leave wills. However, I was not in the actual Mecklenburg/Cabarrus Co., NC, courthouses, so do not know if that is actual fact. I was just able to look through numerous books in the historic Salsburg, NC, genealogy library. Anyway, that is all to say that, since not many wills have been found, John Carlock could have been the son of any of David Carlock's brothers. Or John could have been a son of David himself. Since son John D. always went by the name John D., I wonder if they called him J.D., then had another son named John whom the called John. My grandfather gave the middle name of Pink (short of Pinkney?) to three of his children. He just liked the name! Anyway, I need to create a GEDCOM for John b. 1772, d. 1833 Simpson Co., KY. By the way, tho his tombstone says b. 1772, I think he was b. 1770 based on the fact that he was in the Warren/Simpson Co., KY, tax list in 1819. He would have to be 21 years old to be taxed. However, it may be that John D. Carlock added his initial when John (w/o initial) came of age and the two men needed to be distinguished. John D. Always gave his middle initial, even in Missouri. So, back to the GEDCOM, can someone send me your "report" of John Carlock of Simpson Co., KY? listing marriage, children, etc.? Louise Pietrus, his descendant, has already been a great help. Oh, and Louise, what is the name of the family traced to VA that is used for the reasoning that John was the son of Lemuel? Katheryn __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! 1. Chronology of my WILLIAM VANCE CARLOCK
    2. K Haddad
    3. There were lots of William Vance Carlocks. Mine is the oldest. Perhaps he was so "famous" that all the others were named after him. One can only Hope! Here is a chronology of William Vance Carlock, whom I believe was the son of David Carlock of Warren Co., KY, because (1) Wm. sold land in Stoddard Co., KY, to John D. Carlock, proven son of David Carlock; (2) Wm. named one of his sons David. There were several William Vance Carlocks. They were probably all named after my William Vance Carlock who was 30-40 years older than them. Those I have found are as follows: *1. b.c. 1795 prob. NC, d.1838-40 Stoddard Co., MO. (mine) 2. b. 1834 MO, d. 1863 LA/MS (son of William Vance Sr.)) 3. b.c. 1830 IL, d. Nov. 14, 1915 Austin, TX (son of Jacob b. Darke Co., OH & grson of Jacob b. Rockbridge Co., VA) 4. b.c. 1840 Missouri, d.1924, Austin, TX (I think he is the same as #3) For many years I thought his mother's maiden name might have been Vance. However, WorldConnect shows 528 men with the first name of William Vance, so it may have been just a popular name at that time. 1810: Probable father David Carlock was on page 276, line 11 of the Warren/Spencer (formerly Logan and Lincoln) Co., KY, census as follows: 1 male 45+ - David 1 male 16-26 - son John D. 1 male 1-16 - son WILLIAM VANCE probably (he m. c. 1820 in MO) 1 female 45+ - Elizabeth Probable sister Mary Carlock with husband Tho's Hefington (m. 1804) next door on line 12 as follows: 1 male 26-44 - Thomas 1 male 0-10 - son 1 female 16-26 - wife Mary Carlock 1 female 0-10 - dtr 1 female 0-10 - dtr Probable sister Margaret Carlock with husband Barney Law (m. 1806) next door on line 13 as follows: 1 male 16-26 - Barnabus 1 male 0-10 - son 1 female 16-26 - wife Margaret Carlock 1 female 0-10 - dtr Future wife of John D. Carlock ~ Polly Gibson ~ on line 21 with father John Gipson as follows: 1 male 44+ - Father John Gipson 1 male 0-10 - son 2 males 10-16 - sons 2 males 16-26 - sons 1 female 45+ - Mother Polly 1 female 10-16 - Polly Probable sister Catherine Carlock with husband James Hendricks (m. 1809) on page 277, line 2 as follows: 1 male 16-26 - James Hendricks 1 female 16-26 - wife Catherine Carlock 1 female -10 - dtr Father-in-law of probable brother George W. Carlock ~ John Landers, father of Rachel Landers ~ was on pg. 279, line 27 as follows: 1 male 26-44 - Father John Landers 1 male 1-10 - son 1 female 45+ - Grandmother? 1 female 26-44 - Mother? 3 females 0-10 - dtrs. 1820: July 1, William Carlick had a letter waiting for him in the post office at Cape Girardeau Co., MO. Philip Dellinger (formerly of Lincoln Co., NC) had a letter for him there also on April 8. [Reference: "Missouri Pioneers" Vol. 3] 1830: Found in census of Cape Girardeau Co., MO, as follows: 1 male 30-39 (1791-1800] William 1 male 0-4 [1826-1830] Unk. prob. b.c. 1826 1 female 20-29 [1801-1810] Frances 1 female 10-14 [1816-1820] Prob. b.c. 1820 1 female 5-9 [1821-1825] Emmaline 1 female 0-4 [1826-1830] Unk. prob. b.c. 1828 Did some of his children die? Missouri was a forested wilderness full of malarial mosquitos then. Too, there was a terrible world-wide cholera epidemic in the early 1830s. 1836: William on first Grand Jury of Stoddard County, MO, which had now broken away from Cape Girardeau Co. [Reference: "History of SE Missouri" Goodpasture, pg. 359] 1837: November 14, William received a patent for 40 acres in Stoddard Co., MO, signed by President Martin Van Buren: South East quarter of the South East quarter of Section One in Township 25 North of Range 10 East [Citation: Jackson, MO, Patent Office, Land Patent 4641, Serial #M03450.211: Image via BLM internet site] **1838: May 26, William V. and Fanny his wife sold to William's probably brother John D. Carlock for $100 the following 20 acres in Stoddard Co., MO: One undivided half of the South East quarter of the South East quarter of Section No One in Township number Twenty five North of Range No. Ten East [Source: Stoddard Co., MO, Deed Bk. A, Pg. 53] **NOTE: It is because of this land transaction that I believe William Vance's father was David, the proven father of John D. Also, William named a son David. The 1810 census above shows that both William V. and John D. fit the male sons. 1840: Not in the Wayne Co., MO, census. Stoddard Co. census too light to read. I hope to get back to MO late next summer to look for Wm's marriage, see where he lived before his first MO land purchase, etc. Katheryn __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? 1. Chronology of George W. Carlock b.c. 1779
    2. K Haddad
    3. This is the chronology I have been able to come up with for George W. Carlock b.c. 1779, who I believe is the son of David Carlock of NC & KY. I know several of you have researched this more than I. If you have corrections or additions of DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE (not what "the book" says), please let me/us know. c. 1781: Relationship to David Carlock not proven; but George Carlock was in the same county as David and is the right age to be his son. George's father-in-law lived "3 pages away" from David Carlock in the 1810 Warren Co., KY, census (see below). 1805: Oct. 11 George Carlock & Rachel Landers married in Warren Co., KY. John Landers bondsman. Both over 21. 1810: Census of Warren County (formerly Logan and Lincoln), KY, shows the following on pg. 279, line 27. There was obviously a person in the household of an older generation than the parents. Did the census taker just look and decide this old person was a woman when s/he was actually a man? Could this older person have been John Landers, and the young couple George and Rachel Landers Carlock? 1 male 26-44 - Father John Landers or Husb. George Carlock? 1 male 1-10 - son 1 female 45+ - Grandmother/father? 1 female 26-44 - Mother? or Wife. Rachel Landers Carlock? 3 females 0-10 - dtrs. 1810: Probable father David Carlock was on page 276, line 11 of the Warren/Spencer (formerly Logan and Lincoln) Co., KY, census as follows: 1 male 45+ - David 1 male 16-26 - son John D. 1 male 1-16 - son William Vance probably (he m. c. 1820 in MO) 1 female 45+ - Elizabeth Probable sister Mary Carlock with husband Tho's Hefington (m. 1804) next door on line 12 as follows: 1 male 26-44 - Thomas 1 male 0-10 - son 1 female 16-26 - wife Mary Carlock 1 female 0-10 - dtr 1 female 0-10 - dtr Probable sister Margaret Carlock with husband Barney Law (m. 1806) next door on line 13 as follows: 1 male 16-26 - Barnabus 1 male 0-10 - son 1 female 16-26 - wife Margaret Carlock 1 female 0-10 - dtr Future wife of John D. Carlock ~ Polly Gibson ~ on line 21 with father John Gipson as follows: 1 male 44+ - Father John Gipson 1 male 0-10 - son 2 males 10-16 - sons 2 males 16-26 - sons 1 female 45+ - Mother Polly 1 female 10-16 - Polly Probable sister Catherine Carlock with husband James Hendricks (m. 1809) on page 277, line 2 as follows: 1 male 16-26 - James Hendricks 1 female 16-26 - wife Catherine Carlock 1 female -10 - dtr 1818: Aug. 20, Thos. T. Dixon? sold to George Carlock for $400, 80-1/2 acres on Big Barren River and abutting the line of Benjamin Martin. Witnesses: Samuel Tabore and Jacob Tabore. 1820: Allen (previously Warren) Co, KY, census lists George Carlock on pg. 110, line 18 as follows: 1 male 26-45 - George 1 male 10-16 - son 1 male 0-10 - son 1 male 0-10 - son 1 female 26-45 - wife Rachel Landers 1 female 10-16 - dtr 1 female 0-10 - dtr 1 female 0-10 - dtr 1830: Jan. 16, John & Zeny Ayers and Frederick C. & Zeny Lynch sold to Thomas Ayers for $300, 150 acres bounded by Isaac Satterfield, David Ayers, CARLOCK, Willoby, & Stayten. [Source: Allen Co., KY, Deed Bk. D (1826-1831), pg. 268-269] 1840: Allen/Warren Co., KY, census lists George Carlock on pg. 60 1842: George's grandson, George W., through son, Abraham, married Martha B. Jordan. Martha's brothers married the grand dtrs of George's probable sister, Margaret through her dtr. Polly in Jasper Co., TX. 1842: George's grand dtr. was named Dicey Carlock. In the 1810 census of Warren Co., KY, is a Leonard Reed (pg. 277, line 9) whose mother was Maria Dice Reed. George's possible brother or cousin, John Carlock's son George Washington Carlock (b.1812), married Kitty Read in Warren/Allen Co, KY. Katheryn __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? 1. Chronology of John D. Carlock of KY
    2. K Haddad
    3. I believe John D. Carlock was brother to my William Vance Carlock since Wm. sold his land in Stoddard Co., MO, to John D. Carlock. John D. is the proven son of David Carlock, Warren Co., KY. Because of this land transaction and the fact that my William Vance Carlock named a son David, I believe they were both sons of David Carlock. I may never be able to prove it. Thanks to L. Pietrus for sending me the early Simpson Co., KY, tax lists. 1814: Jan. 6, John D. Carlock married Polly [Mary] Gibson/Gipson in Warren [later Simpson] Co., KY. 1. Chronology of Mary H. Carlock of KY
    2. K Haddad
    3. This is the chronology of Mary H. Carlock of Warren Co., KY, the best I could piece it together. Lots of unanswered questions. The Heffingtons were hard for me to trace. 1804: July 7, Mary Carlock married Thomas Heffington/Hefferton in Logan Co., KY. Thomas Heffington's brother, Stephen, married Fanny Gilliland. Fanny Gilliland's sister Mary Ann married John Farr Lowe who married Mary's sister, Margaret Carlock, in 1806. 1806: February 3, Mary's sister, Margaret, married Barnabus Lowe also in Logan Co., KY. 1810: Probable father David Carlock was on page 276, line 11 of the Warren/Spencer (formerly Logan and Lincoln) Co., KY, census as follows: 1 male 45+ - David 1 male 16-26 - son John D. 1 male 1-16 - son William Vance probably (he m. c. 1820 in MO) 1 female 45+ - Elizabeth Mary Carlock with husband Tho's Hefington (m. 1804) next door on line 12 as follows: 1 male 26-44 - Thomas 1 male 0-10 - son 1 female 16-26 - wife Mary Carlock 1 female 0-10 - dtr 1 female 0-10 - dtr Probable sister Margaret Carlock with husband Barney Law (m. 1806) next door on line 13 as follows: 1 male 16-26 - Barnabus 1 male 0-10 - son 1 female 16-26 - wife Margaret Carlock 1 female 0-10 - dtr Future wife of John D. 1. Family of David Carlock of Mecklenburg Co., NC, and Warren Co., KY
    2. K Haddad
    3. Below is what I have found on the probable family of David Carlock of Mecklenburg Co., NC, and Warren Co., KY. I have listed his two known children and his other probable children based on much indirect evidence: George W. Carlock b.c. 1781, m. Rachael Landers, d.1840-50 prob. Fayette Co., IL Mary H. Carlock b.c. 1784, m. Thomas Heffington Catherine Carlock b.c. 1789, m. James Hendricks Margaret Carlock b. 1789, m. Barnabus Lowe, d. 1840 Jasper Co., TX John D. Carlock b.c. 1795, m. Polly Gibson, lived Missouri *William Vance Carlock b.c. 1797, m. Fannie ?, d.c. 1839 Stoddard Co, MO I have concluded (and it may never be proven) that David Carlock is my William Vance Carlock's father because (1) He sold land in Stoddard Co., MO, to proven son of David, John D. Carlock. (2) He named a son David. Below, now, is my chronology of David Carlock b.c. 1755 NC, m. Elizabeth ?, d.c. 1815 Warren Co., KY: ********************** c. 1789 - Dtr Catherine born (relationship proven on marriage license in Warren Co., KY) c. 1781 - Probable son George born c. 1784 - Probable dtr Mary born c. 1791 - Probable dtr Margaret born 1792: Signed petition against the division of Mecklenburg Co., NC, into more counties. Capt. Chas. T. Alexander's Company included David Carlock. [Citation: "Cabarrus Co., NC, Court of Common Pleas 1793-1787 and Deed Books 1793-1801", pg. 26] c. 1795: Son John D. born (relationship proven on marriage license in Warren Co., KY) 1796: April 18, Item 2:132, John Means, James Scott and Leonard Barberick, Commissioners, sold to DAVID CARLOCK for 1 pound, 6 shillings and 6 pence Lot #9 in the SE Square of the TOWN OF CONCORD. [Citation: Tax Lists of Mecklenburg Co., NC]. Was David in the process of moving to KY at this time? Or had he decided to just rent a shop in Concord? CARLOCKs who lived near each other in KY, both having descendants who used both the spellings "CARLOCK" and "CEARLOCK". The George mentioned in Katheryn's posting is listed on pages 438 - 440, and is pictured, along with some of his family members, on page 439 of the book "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929. Oliver 2/10/1997 The Read/Duncan Family of Allen County, KY The following is my transcription of two 1889 newspaper clippings which provide wonderful details about the lives and history of theRead/Duncan family of Fauquier Co.,VA and Allen Co., KY. I made everyeffort to retain the original spelling, punctuation and grammar. The two clippings were in a two-ring binder which belonged to mygreat-grandmother, Nancy Helen (Carlock) Groves (19 August 1843-1 Feb.1935, Hermleigh, TX), whose mother was Kitty Virginia Read (13 December1815- ca 1845), wife of George W. 1. Re: Documents of Carlocks in NC
    2. Susan Tilleman
    3. This is in reply to Katheryn HADDAD's posting to the CARLOCK list today titled "Documents of Carlocks in NC". It will take me a long time to sift through all of the information Katheryn provided. I am very much interested in this material because I am still searching for information regarding the ancestry of my direct ancestor, George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC. With regard to the excerpt from Katheryn's material which follows this message, Henry GOODNIGHT of Mason Co., KY, was an uncle to my George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK's (b. ca. 1779, NC) wife Rachel LANDERS. Both Rachel's mother Catherine GOODNIGHT LANDERS and Henry GOODNIGHT were children of Hans Michael "Michael" GOODNIGHT and his first wife. At this point I am not sure whether the "Frederick Carlack" who lived next to Henry GOODNIGHT was the elder or the younger Frederick CARLOCK. If anyone can identify which Frederick this was, please let me know. The significance of this record to me is that it establishes a connection between Frederick's family and the in-laws of my George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK, providing further evidence for my belief that George is somehow descended from the elder Frederick CARLOCK. Also of note in this excerpt are the names Col. Martin PHIFFER, Benjamin SHINN, and George RODGERS. According to pages 215 and 615 of the book "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, George CARLOCK (s/o Frederick, David), b. 1740, "served as a private soldier in Captain Martin Pfifer's 2nd Troop North Carolina Light Horse Dragoons from Mecklenburg County." George's daughter Rebecca married a SHINN, first name not yet identified. With regard to the surname ROGERS, see "ORIGINAL MESSAGE #1" below in which I am attempting to find the connection between a Joseph ROGERS mentioned in a 1787 Mecklenburg Co., NC, court record which also included the names Christopher LANDESS and Henry KERLOCK. Christopher LANDESS was a grandfather of my George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK's (b. ca. 1779, NC) wife Rachel LANDERS. Christopher LANDESS's daughter Mary also married the above-mentioned Hans Michael "Michael" GOODNIGHT as his second wife. The following excerpt can be found on page 209 of the book "William Moore GOODNIGHT of Johnson County, Missouri, 1875 - 1951", by Veda GOODNIGHT JONES and Mabel GOODNIGHT STEVENSON: "Henry, ... son of Michael and his first wife, married Elizabeth (Condor?). On August 7, 1787 he obtained a North Carolina Land Grant (#674) for 39 1/2 acres on Buffalo Creek. This creek was not named on our map of Cabarrus County, but we were told that it ran along the south side of the present town of Concord. Henry sold this tract in two parcels. One (28 3/4 acres} to George Condor on August 21, 1792, the other (10 3/4 acres) to John Morgadnt (?) on May 25, 1793." This portion of Mecklenburg County became Cabarrus County in 1792. I am related to both this CARLOCK/KERLOCK family and this LANDESS/LANDIS family, but have not yet determined what Henry KERLOCK's relationship was to the LANDESSes in 1787. Henry KERLOCK was living in nearby Rutherford Co., NC, at the time. I would also like to determine the relationship between Joseph ROGERS and the LANDESSes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 1. David Carlock's son John D. Carlock
    2. K Haddad
    3. I am coming to believe more and more strongly that the father of my William Vance Carlock (b. 1795; d.c. 1840 Stoddard Co., MO) is David Carlock found in Warren Co., KY. 1. Wm. named his first son after himself, and his second son David. 2. Wm. is connected to John D. Carlock, also of Warren Co., KY, as follows: 1838: May 26, William Vance Carlock and Fanny his wife sold to John D. Carlock for $100 the following 20 acres in Stoddard Co., MO: One undivided half of the South East quarter of the South East quarter of Section No One in Township number Twenty five North of Range No. Ten East [Source: Stoddard Co., MO, Deed Bk. A, Pg. 53] 1838: May 26 John D. Carlock mortaged the following 40 acres to William Wray: North West quarter of the North West quarter of Section No. 23 Town. No. 26 North of Range 10 East ....and another 40 acres: South West quarter of the South West quarter of Section No. ? Town. 26 North of 10 East [Source: Stoddard Co., MO, Deed Bk. A, Pg. 54-55] So this gave John D. Carlock a total of 180 Acres. What do you KY Carlock descendants think? I'll send you more clues later. This is plenty for now. 1. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK/CURLOCK Family of Fayette, Montgomery, and Jefferson Co., IL
    2. Susan Tilleman
    3. I have finally been able to connect the CURLOCK family of Jefferson Co., IL, to my CARLOCK/CEARLOCK family of nearby Fayette and Montgomery Counties. David CARLOCK/KEARLOCK/CURLOCK (s/o Jacob CARLOCK/CARELOCK, George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK), b. 1838/39, probably Bowling Green, Warren Co., KY; m.#1. Rebecca OSBORN, Aug. 29, 1857, Montgomery Co., IL, and divorced ca. 1858, Jefferson Co., IL; m.#2. Elizabeth "Bets" BOOK, Nov. 9, 1858, Jefferson Co., IL, and divorced ca. 1864, Jefferson Co., IL; m.#3. Elizabeth TURMAN, Jan. 1, 1866, Jefferson Co., IL; d. Aug. 16, 1906, May, Garland Co., AR. Note that some of David's children used the surname BOOK instead of the surname CURLOCK. Military pension papers also show that David lived in Lamar Co., TX, in 1884. David is mistakenly listed as "Daniel" in some records, probably due to the handwriting on his marriage license to Elizabeth "Bets" BOOK which could easily be mistaken for "Daniel". David was also a private in Company I, 60th ! Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry, during the Civil War. Information about David and his descendants can be found in the following report which appears on my homepage: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/t/i/l/Susan-E-Tilleman/GENE18-0001.html . Since the exact lineage of David's grandfather George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC, has not yet been determined, David's lineage appears as follows in my report at this time: Hans GERLACH David GERLACH/CARLOCK Frederick Cornelius CARLOCK unknown CARLOCK (anc. of G. CARLOCK, ca. 1779) George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK Jacob CARLOCK/CARELOCK David CARLOCK/KEARLOCK/CURLOCK Any additional information about this family would be greatly appreciated.
