Hi Ode! Thank you for your information ... I do actually have the book ... some of my fellow listers on the Dumfries-Galloway List feel that much of what C. L. Johnstone wrote is guesswork, but it is interesting to read. I am looking for a book entitled "Collections for a History of the Ancient Family of Carlisle", published privately in 1822 by Nicholas Carlisle. that may have been the book Johnstone referred to although the title is slightly different. I looked for your Nathaniel Carlile among the info I had, but couldn't find anyone of that name. There was a branch of families that spelled their name CARLILE who went to Paisley, England. You might have more luck there. Also I suspect Nathaniel is not a Scottish name, so he was probably born in the US. I'll keep in touch ... cheers from Linda Odecarlile@aol.com wrote: > Since you have many names from the Borders and Dumfriesshire area, I assume > you probably have the following book, but I am posting it's identification for > any others who may not know about it.
