Randy,I have read the the book<The History Of Lowndesville South Carolina> and have talked to the author several times but these are not my Carliles directly. They may be distant cousins. My Carliles were in MS in 1840-50,St.Johns-Berkeley in 1820-30 and I think Horry Co.in 1800-10.The author of the above is now working on a book of just Carlile history.I am anxious to see it. If the book is not in a library near you you might try to get your local librarian to order it on interlibrary loan. However, only a few member libraries will lend genealogy books although they readily lend other types of books. The copy I saw in Conroe had a $16.00 price tag in it, but the price quote for the new reprint from Clearfield is $75.00! I have never seen them jump a price like this before. The book may also be in other libraries who are not associated with WorldCat. Ode Carlisle

This is in response to suezque2's query early this month. I have no info in response to the specific query. However, in response to the general query about Carliles/Carlisles from VA, I would like to call attention to a particular book. It is "Early Western Augusta Pioneers: including the families of Cleek, Gwin, Lightner, and Warwick, and related families of Bratton, Campbell, Carlile, Craig, Crawford, Dyer, Gay, Givens, Graham, Harper, Henderson, Hull, Keister, Lockridge, McFarland, and Moore," by George Washington Cleek, 1889-?, reprinted by Clearfield Publishing Company (subsidiary of Genealogical Publishing Co.), 1995, 1997, 1999. This is a paperback 6 x 9, over 400 pages. I do not have a copy but I searched Worldcat on OCLC and located 16 libraries which have it. The nearest copy is in the Conroe Public Library, about 50 miles north of Houston where I live. I looked at it there last fall. It contains a large amount of specific information about a good many Carliles who lived in early VA. None of them seem related to my earliest known ancestor, Nathaniel Carlile, will probated in Halifax Co., NC in 1812, although some think he came from VA. If anyone requests, I will post the list of libraries that have it. Ode Carlisle
Hi! I am looking for members of the Samuel & Mary Carlyle family. Both were born in Scotland around 1800. Their daughter, my ggg grandmother, Esther Carlyle, was born 24 April 1824 in England. The family returned to Scotland and Esther married John Allan, son of James Allan & Margaret Stirling, on 27 February 1842 in Gorbals, Lanarkshire, Scotland. John & Esther had one son in Scotland, James, born in 1844. The rest of their children, Mary, John, Wallace, Agnes, Esther, Jessie, Samuel, & William were all born in Ontario. In 1870, the family settled in Bay City, Michigan, where Esther Carlyle Allan died on 19 May 1874. If anyone thinks they may be connected to this Carlyle/Allan family, please contact me. Thanks! I am descended from William Carlisle (1794-1879) and his wife Eleanor Elizabeth Cooper (1795-1866). They came to the US in 1848 and 1849, respectively, with their children Samuel, Mary Jane (married John W. Cephas), Eliza (married William H. Powell), Sarah, William J., Margaret (married Samuel Rodgers), and Agnes (?). They lived in New Philadelphia, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, and many are buried at the Fair Avenue Cemetery. There are several land transactions in Brooke County, WV, 1814, and in Union and Tuscarawas Counties in the 1830s involving William and James Carlisle. Does anyone have any information that might link these individuals? Thank you. Nancy Carlile Geasey
Hello Randy,Thanks for responding.Things I have read about William Carlile are he was from New York and arrived in SC before 1688,he owned property partly in Colleton and partly in Berkeley.I am trying to find a link to Mary Carlile, who was listed as head of household of nine people in the 1820 Berkeley census.A Nathaniel Marion appeared to be living in the same household. Also David Nathaniel Carlile and Jehu Carlile were living in the same area in 1830.(David was my g-g-grandfather).David moved to Jones Co.MS and Jehu moved to Perry Co.by 1840.Also John and William Carlisle in Horry Co.in 1800 and John's widow in 1810(she was listed as Widow). All of these people listed as Carlile and Carlisle at different times.Which of these people can you tie togather.Thanks. Fred.
I never get any "information" Just vol. numbers etc. What do people learn? I'm confused. Looking for help on David Carlile, born circa 1740 in New Jersey? Found documents in Hunterdon Co NJ courthouse on a David Carlile, which I believe is my David. He moved to Loudoun Co VA in early 1760's. Married Mary Etta Brown on 4/22/1760 (bible states this date and location as Probahim District NJ - which I've been unable to locate). Mary Etta Brown was the daughter of James Brown and Margaret Barclay. In Loudoun Co Va, they had the following family Robert Carlile 4/29/1781 d 3/22/1871 m Catherine Brown John b 3/13/1761 died young James 1/18/1764 m Elizabeth Beatty? They had 11 children and I can give information on this couple, if anyone is researching.
Diana, I saw that Clinton Carlisle he is not mine I don't think. Barbara, I went out and got the 10 CD set from FTM, I don't think it was worth the money. I have used the Social Sec. Death Index, but thats about it. The others are family tree's that have been done. But, I have yet to be able to connect any of my family members to those. I wish FTM had a way of viewing information on a CD before you buy it. The web site they offer, you put in a name and it sends back however may of their CD's show that name. That does not mean the names are your people. Just folks with the same name. Good Luck Debbie Diana I have not seen the Family tree CD's. Have you seen information on John Farris and Hannah Shumate in Crawford Co., Mo. mar. 1843. Have you seen Missouri Farris' on any CD? Thank you. Barbara
Barbara, Sorry I only buy the ones that pertain to my lines. You can check out what they have and if your people are on any of their cd's at: http://www.familytreemaker.com/index.html A lot of people have web sites there also so be prepared to take a while to go through everything. Good hunting! Diana

Looking for information on this line in MD & KY. I believe these were very devout Catholics and probably would have lived in areas where other Catholics settled, at least in KY. Of course, it only takes one marriage to a Catholic to change the course of religion in a family. They could have been Quaker at some point! Dear Debbie, The name "Clinton" seems to be familiar but I can't quite place it. So I started going through my cd's. I found a Clinton born May, 1893 AL to William J. Carlisle and Mattie Ross. It's on Family Tree Maker's World Family Tree Vol. 2, tree 3215. If you do not have access to this cd, please contact me. It takes the line back to apx 1757. I still haven't figured out why "Clinton" rings a bell. Diana
Hello everyone I am researching some of our Carlisle's. We know that Clinton S. Carlisle DOB abt1894 is the GGgrandfather on husbands side. He was said to be from Aplaca Alabama. However that place does not exist. They could have meant the Northern part of Ala, or Opliaka County. I have not found them listed on any records in Alabama however. He did marry Ruby Taylor in 1911 and they lived in Uvalde County Uvalde Texas until his death in 1926. These are the names on back of an old photo we found, believed to be his brothers and sisters. Does anyone know anything about this line of Carlisle? They have spelled it Carlisle dating back to Clinton. Acree Carlisle Alice Carlisle Author Carlisle Louise Carlisle Mary Carlisle Nolan Carlisle At a brick wall any help would be wonderful Thanks Debbie
Pleas remove me from the Carlile D list and leave me on the L list that way I can save individual messages that I want. Thanks Barbara
I just received this from another mail list. I thought it might be of interest to both new and old genealogists. Reading old handwriting can be very frustrating and this helps decipher some of the old abbreviations and letters. http://www.firstct.com/fv/oldhand.html Diana
