    1. Re: Carlisle in Alabama
    2. Re possible French connection for Carlisles, I think this would be an exceptional situation--a family that had moved from England or Scotland to France and then to this country.. In the past several years I have looked through a number of different encyclopedias and dictionaries of surnames for the origin of the Carlisle surname. Without exception they have stated that Carlisles are named after Carlisle, England. I have a book on Galloway and Dumfriesshire, Scotland (nearest Carlisle, England) which tells about numerous Carliles that lived in the area in the ninth century. The spelling seems to have evolved into Carlyle in Scotland and to Carlisle in England. The information I have is that surnames were not generally used in England until William the Conqueror came in 1066 and began to impose French customs and procedures. Also, that most early surnames were based on a town or origin or on the names of occupations. We were in Carlisle, England last month and toured the castle and cathedral. There are only half a dozen Carliles and Carlisles there now. Ode Carlisle

    3. Sorry, we're Brits. But there's usually some truth to family stories if you keep digging. My friend's family had a story about being French, also, although their name sounds very much English. Turns out, their immigrant ancestor did come from England. But his son, once over here, married a French woman. So there was French down that line, just not that particular surname. 3. Hello everyone, This might sound like a really silly question, but I was floored last night when my sister in law, ( I am researching husbands Carlisle roots this is his sister) Said that her father was French? That the Carlisle family was from France. Does anyone know about this French connection to the Carlisle family? Their father was born in Lee County Alabama, and as far as I can tell so was his father, William Jackson Carlisle b 1860, Opelika, Lee County Alabama. Any help with this question? Thanks Debbie

On GenConnect we have been having a discussion about copyright as it pertains to obituaries. Until just a little while ago, the policy was stated that it was better to abstract obituaries--to err on the safe side--even though it seems that most obituaries are not copyrighted. Copyrighted obituaries are usually long, have a byline and probably a picture of the deceased. Okay, that was how matters stood until a message was forwarded to us from Copyright-L, from a copyright attorney who said flatly that articles are written by reporters and they are covered by copyright; obituaries are not copyrighted "at present." 3. On the SC roster of revolutionary soldiers there are two John Carlile/Carlisles. One John Carlile served in the 2nd Regiment, the other John Carlisle served with the militia during1789 and 1782. At some time he was under Capt. Samuel Price and Col. McDonald. Does anyone know anything about either John Carlile. Could either be the John Carlile who died in Horry Co. between 1800 and 1810. Fred W. Carlile

Marrowbone was in or around Cheatham or Davidson Counties. The time frame would be late 1800s or early 1900s. Does anyone have any information on this connection. Fred Carlile

    3. William, Right now I am the person that is putting all the info together on the Fegley list. It has turned out to be more of a job than I anticipated especially since I am also planning a wedding in 6 weeks for our youngest daughter. Hopefully someone else will volunteer to collect and put the Carlile info together. I really recommend doing it for one geographical location at a time. A lot of people on the Fegley mail list are out there looking up data and sending it to me via the list to incorporate into the data base. It's really shaping up. Sometimes I receive duplicate info but it never hurts to have the data verified. I won't be available to coordinate another name until after the wedding. Also, before starting all that work, it would be a good idea to make sure that the Carlile list owner is willing to help post that much data. However, I agree, obviously, that it is a good idea. It's been a lot of fun, too. Diana "William K. Carlile" wrote: > > Diana, > > I, too, think that you all have a great idea. 3. Rena, I think this is a wonderful idea. On another list that I subscribe to, we are combining all of our oldest info on the that surname that occurs in the state of Pennsylvania. We have over 1000 names so far and some of the family groups are starting to tie together. If we do that on this list, we need to be sure to include our sources. When we finish combining the names, they will be sent to the list owner and he is going to post them both on a web site and a few pages at a time on the list. Not everyone can download files or large documents so we will send 4 to 6 pages at a time via the list. Comments? Diana .................................................
