This has been an informative thread. Would anyone like to volunteer to write up a little "article" summarizing all the posts on Moravian West Indian Records for the CaribGenWeb site? One is Behtlehem, Pennyslvania and the other is in Salem, North Carolina. These are the "Headquarters" of what is known as the Northern Province and the Southern Province respectively. > > The Pennyslvania one started out in Georgia (1735). They were invited to settle land in Savannah, Georgia by James Oglethorpe, proprietor of the Colony. They moved on to Pennsyvania (1740). > > The Southern Province started in North Carolina in 1753. In 1749 British Parliament had declared the Moravians to be an ancient Protestant Episcopal church giving it legal status alongside the Church of England. > > They were sold land in the Carolina territories by John Carteret, Earl of Granville, Lord Proprietor of the Carolina Colonies, in 1753. > > I mention dates for chronology, and names because we are sure to find the same names in the history of the West Indies. > > It is this "Headquarters" that I expected to find sending missionaries even further South to the Caribbean. This has been confirmed to-day by the Public Resources Librarian at the Moravian College in Salem, North Carolina. I was not surprised that this was the case, as I had noticed considerable historical connections between the Caribbean and North Carolina. So I am now waiting to hear from the Moravian Archives in Salem, North Carolina for further information. > > I attach the links to the pages for history of the Southern Province and the Moravian Archives in Salem North Carolina for others with a similar interest. > > Richard > > http://www.moravianarchives.org/history/briefhistory.htm > > http://www.moravianarchives.org/ > > > > ==== CARIBBEAN Mailing List ==== > ROOTSWEB MAILING LIST HELP PAGES > What is a Mailing List? > http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help/mail1.html >
