Hi Joan-Marie, If you are asking if the Barbados Museum and Historical Society's Journal go back to 1686, the answer is no. The Journal only started in 1933. However, extracts from Newspapers of B'do families and affairs from 1783-1870 have been covered by Vols. 1-33 of the Society's Journal. But this is outside your relevant period. On the presence of a Synagogue in St. Michael's, this might be the one in Bridge-town, for which the cemetary has been restored and information on the monuments recorded. Here is a link with publications and persons to contact for further information. http://www.jewishgen.org/cemetery/atl-caribbean/barbados.html On the question about whether actual wills are available, you can certainly request a copy from the Archives, using the references in Sanders. But I doubt if you will get a copy of the original will because: "There exists in Barbados three series of Wills - original wills, wills record books and wills re-copied record books. The original wills are very imperfect before 1723, and only reasonably complete from about 1800. Fortunately the series of record books, though incomplete, dates from 1650 and, with the re-copied books forms an almost complete record of wills from that date, although some of the copies are not very accurately transcribed. There is an index referring to both series, with occasional references to original wills." This is from the Barbados Dept. of Archives Factoid on Population Records. It is possible that Sanders recorded Jew merchant by mistake but I doubt it. It is also possible that the copying and recopying might have been the source of the a msitake which Sanders followed. You might want to cross-check it against records of Assessment of Rate Books which for St. Michaels go from 1683/5 - 1716; 1722-1729; 1749-1765. But this might involve getting a paid researcher, which can be recommended to you by the Department of Archives. You might also want such a researcher to look in the Jewish Registers which go from 1660 forward. I hope this all helps. Regards Richard
