Hello List; the great-nephew of the gentleman below has written to me as follows: ".. my great uncle . was a former governor of the Leeward Islands from 1895-1901 & I was wondering where I might locate a photo of him, or any detail as to his career as Governor & living in Government House." Does anyone have any knowledge of what photo (portrait) archives might exist and where? Is this the sort of thing that one would find in the PRO? To the best of my knowledge the Barbados Archives do not have a portrait collection; is there such a thing in Antigua? Grateful for any hints anyone can provide. Hi Ernest, I will have to be universal. If he is in the UK he can try the Bodleian. It has "Papers of British Governors" he might certainly get details of Sir Francis Fleming's Governorship there. Who knows there might even be an unpublished Memoir. He can search the on-line catalogue, but the reference would not say which governors' papers are there. He will have to call there personally or phone or write (as the last time I checked there was no email) and arrange to go through their catalogue of manuscripts. The Bodleian might also have portraits in various books. For Portraits one can search on-line the National Portrait Gallery in London in the UK. It also has a Photograph collection, which I do not think can be searched on-line, but a search request can be made by email or one can go in person here is the link. http://www.npg.org.uk/live/collect.asp There is also the British Library for books on the Leewards, also to be surely present in other Libraries in the West Indies and North America which can be searched for portraits or photographs, especially Illustrated Histories, and Directories and Travel Books. Material published during the Governor's tenure might also have his portrait especially if produced by the Govt. of the Leewards. And not to forget, the BL's Newspaper Collection. I hope this helps.
