There is a large family by that name living in the Virgin Islands. I do not now whether there is a connection but I do know that as the St. Croix sugar industry went into a decline in the early 1800s and then collapsed with emancipation in 1848 a lot of Cruzan planters bought plantation land in Puerto Rico. The Spaniards opened up new areas for grants and Puerto Rican planters sold older lands. A lot of these older haciendas were ranchos raising cattle were relatively flat and they could be replanted in cane. The newer grants were limited to connected Catholics but older lands if held in fee could be purchased by people of any denomination or religion.
