I am trying to piece together the life of my GG Grandfather's youngest daughter, Rosa Louisa Swertner BADHAM. 4 APR 1842 She marries William Henry OATES a Moravian Minister in the Moravian chapel in Bristol. Shortly after this they travel to Jamaica as Moravian missionaries. She had been Governess in the school at Wyke. 4 JUL 1843 information is received at Bristol on the death of Br W. Oates. Since letters take about a month, he must have died sometime in June 1843. There may be a tablet in the burial ground at Bethany. 9 AUG 1843 a letter is received at Bristol from Sr Oates. 19 NOV 1845 visit of Br Thos. COOKE on his way to the mission in Jamaica. He probably arrives there some time in December. In the Jamaican Almanac there is a table of Moravian churches and a Th. Cook is minister at Bethany, Parish of Manchester. It is likely that William and Rosa were also at Bethany. Rosa subsequently marries Thomas COOKE and they have two children that I know of, James and Arthur Wickham COOKE. In the Almanac for 1864 there is a list of Moravian churches and their ministers, but no Thomas Cook. I assume that they returned to England before that date. In the Moravian diaries for Bristol there is the following: "1872 Personal Occurrences: Gone from Bristol John W. Oates (non Comt) to Heckmondwike." This is possibly Rosa's son by her marriage to William. He would have been about 30 years old. I would like to find William's date of death, Rosa's marriage to Thomas COOKE, and the births of her three children, John, James and Arthur. Can anyone help me with what sources are available and if dissenter marriages had to be in the Anglican Church prior to civil registration in Jamaica (1878?). LDS Family Search turns up nothing. -- Thanks and regards, Shane. "A closed mouth gathers no feet!" Website: http://www.wonk.demon.co.uk
Hi Shane: In answer to your questions: 1. Re William Oates's date of death -- I doubt there would be a burial record for him in the parish registers which have been microfilmed by the LDS, since he was a Moravian, but it might be worthwhile checking. You would need to know what parish he was stationed in. 2. Re Rosa's marriage to Thos. Cooke -- that should appear in the Dissenter Marriage Registers which have also been microfilmed by the LDS 3. Births of their children --- probaby unlikely if they were baptized in the Moravian faith. The LDS have microfilmed the Church of England parish registers for Jamaica, but the Dissenter Marriage Registers are the only non-conformist records that they have microfilmed. For an outline of what records are available from the LDS check out Patricia Jackson's website, Jamaican Family Search. It is a subscription site but well worth the cost if you are doing research in Jamaica. The section regarding the LDS microfilms is free and can be found at http://jamaicanfamilysearch.com/Samples/fhclist.htm. Once you have the microfilms you need you can order them at any Family History Centre of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). ----- Original Message ----- From: Shane Badham Newsgroups: soc.genealogy.west-indies To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, November 24, 2007 1:37 PM Subject: The life of Rosa L S Badham in Jamaica I am trying to piece together the life of my GG Grandfather's youngest daughter, Rosa Louisa Swertner BADHAM. 4 APR 1842 She marries William Henry OATES a Moravian Minister in the Moravian chapel in Bristol.
