Hello list, Below is a message received this AM needing a reply which my humble knowledge of Scotland does not allow. Considering all the exceptional information recently posted regarding Scotland's involvement in the slave trade, I thought someone on this list would have knowledge regarding the posted question. Best regards, Denis ************************************************************************ **************************** "Do you know anyhing about marriages 1740's in Scotland? How likely would it be for a "country marriage" to occur in 1736 and then a formal sanctioned marriage to occur in 1740? The church was generally powerful in Scotland around the time of the clearances. Wish my knowledge of the Jacobites vs. Protestant religion was better. Suppose I should google and try to find out more. Have a distant grandfather, a Gryphin Nicol christened 1737 (Fam. Search) b. to a John Nicol and Christian Wear whose marriage is shown as 1740 (Family Search). The Scots had different marriage rules and laws than the English with country marriages being acceptable, but church sanction desirable. At certain times, the church had people shunned for not having a church sanction union. Gryphin Nicol b.1734 Carmyllie m. a Matilda (aka Meatie) Carey b. 1726 in Monikie. Have found the burial of Matilda/Meatie's parents.\ in Craigtoun. Know you are doing middle ages, but am hoping your knowledge might advise on this birth date a couple years prior to the marriage. Should I be looking for a lst marriage or does this sound like something more or less the norm?"
I would suggest to your correspondent that he check this baptism and marriage on Scotland's People, at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ It's a subscritpion site but you can purchase the basic number of credits for £6. As far as I can see, and also on Family Search, Gryphin Nicol is listed as the son of James Nicol, unmarried, baptized in 1737, in Carmyllie, Angus, no mother named. As for Christian Wear, she marries in 1733 in Selkirk to one William Taleford. I found no marriage to a John Nicol. These are both from extracted records. I could not see a marriage in 1740 for her.
