Hello everyone. Does anyone on the list know anything about a PEDDER family, in particular a Charles Lloyd PEDDER, who marries a Barbadian, Mary Elizabeth LEACOCK circa 1850? I have found one reference to him in the Gentlemens Magazine in 1855: 1855 Vol. 199. p. 86 Promotions & Preferments &c. May 30. ... "Henry Augustus Tudor, John James Haddock, and Charles Lloyd Pedder esqrs. to be non-elective Members of the Legislative Council of the Virgin Islands." He appeared to be in St. Thomas, V.I. His parents may have been a John Thomas & Mary Grace PEDDER who also seem to have connections to Nevis. My info is very sketchy, and I would like to know more about him & if and how he is related to a Henry Charles PEDDER, who marries in Barbados in 1866, before fetching up in Brooklyn, and working in New York as a Bookkeeper. He moved to Orange, New Jersey, where he built an enormous architect designed mansion in 1881 ... by embezzling something in the order of $250,000 to $500,000 dollars from his employers! The fraud came to light in 1884: he did not go to prison, but handed over all the property to the firm he had defrauded, and according to one source, went "to the Barbados islands", but I can find no further trace of him. It was a huge scandal in New York at that time. That mansion, "Glenmount", also referred to as the Pedder House, was then bought by, and became the family home of Thomas Alva Edison! I would be grateful for any further information on any of these or other Pedders in the West Indies. My thanks Ernest Wiltshire
Hi, Ernest, It's always good to see you on the list. Some time ago, Heather sent me her Excel spreadsheet of Anguilla baptisms 1870-1913 with a Pedder; might be some connection. Heather, are you there? Also, I have so much fun with Familysearch.org's pilot web site (http://pilot.familysearch.org ), because the filters are so easy to use. There is a Charles Pedder in the NY census (Brooklyn) 1892 born 1860 Barbados, listed as an alien. Interestingly, I also found this through my primitive Googling: "Matthew Pedder settled in Barbados with his wife and son in 1678; John Pedder settled in Maryland in 1729; Charles Pedder settled in Virginia in 1765; William Pedder settled in Virginia in 1774." No sources are given; this is from a site that sells coats of arms. There is some sort of "Pedder collection" at the Barbados Museum. In 1876, there was a "disturbance" at Mount Prospect involved Mr. Pedder, who lived in Mt Prospect House. This is probably not your man, but there is a Pedder in a book which I cannot view, entitled "The complete book of emigrants in bondage, 1614-1775 by Peter Wilson Coldham" and a Charles Pedder dated 1765 in "Bonded passengers to America" and in "English Convicts in colonial America" by the same gent.
