At one time I received 50 or so junk mails a day. My server (in Costa Rica) was on a blacklist. The server eventually cleaned up and got off the list but until I installed a good anti-spyware and anti-virus program the junk mail continued to pour in. I've been using the free versions of Avast (which scans email) and Windows Defender for several years now and install updates whenever they are available (usually daily). The junk mail has gone down to maybe one or two every now and then. Perhaps good security maintenance is the key to staying safe - and it goes without saying I never open attachments from unknown sources (although it seems I'm missing out on millions of unclaimed dollars!). My email address (Gmail) on this list has never received junk or other threats. Yet. MarkoeJohn

    3. Hi John I entirely agree with you that we must ourselves accept the prime responsibility for Internet security on our own computers. A friend of mine reserves the use of one address solely for communicating with another family history List, so that it can be changed if necessary without the need to notify every other active contact in his address book. My own security software also keeps nasties to a minimum, but the junk-mail I received from "Ann Q" used her correct address, which I am reluctant to add to my banned list. Even so, I broke two personal rules in clicking on the link it contained: 1. Be wary of opening e-mails with blank subject lines (I was considering writing to Ann first) 2. Be very wary of clicking on hyperlinks unsupported by a satisfactory covering message but I must now add a third rule 3.Leave to the morning (when my judgement is more acute) dealing with any e-mail falling into categories 1 &/ or 2 Best wishes Peter Moll On 28/01/2010 07:52, markoe <markoejohn519@gmail.com> wrote: I've had posts for many years at Rootsweb and many other sites.
