I need to find out if there are any lists out there of immigrants to Jamaica from England. (Around 1870). I have a name change problem that I need to solve. I know that the Last name was changed while living in Jamaica. My great grandfather came from England around 1870. On interviewing family, I was given two different last Names as the original name. It therefore makes it very difficult to do any further reasearch on that side of my family. I was told that the person lived in the Enfield area of England and I know for a fact that he worked with the Baptist Church in Trelawney Jamaica. He had children and raised them there. Then He died in Jamaica. I tried Ancestry.co.uk and many other websites. I also looked at a few passenger lists. I will supply more info if anybody thinks that they could help me. Yes, I've seen these items. Apparently, after Elisha's wife died he married in his later years to a distant relative who looked after him for the rest of his days - so says the Rev. Harris in his obituary of Elisha. I have looked all over to try to find out who Sophia was - so far no luck, but then I haven't searched all his cousins to find out if they have a Sophia in their lines. And yes, I've seen all these links and have gleaned bits and pieces about Elisha's life. Thanks for taking the trouble to put this all together. Much appreciated. Tina, I don't know if this is the case in other countries during that era, but at least in the US, there were court documents one could file in order to legally change a surname. I would search for a newspaper notice or the courts. Anyone in Jamaica who could contact a clerk of court to find out where the old records are? You could also check death certificates, as perhaps they would have recorded the original name (you never know what someone will put on a death certificate). Also, perhaps the Baptists kept records of membership annually and would have recorded it the original way shortly before recording it the later way. By the way, you can search by first name ONLY on Ancestry.com as well as at FamilySearch.org. You can pump in various dates and see who swims to the surface. Also, be mindful that in censuses, even though a head of family's given or surname may be unknown to you, you can sometimes find a constellation of children, spouse, and head of household whose first names and ages all sync up very closely with the family for whom you search. So we can keep an eye out, what was the original surname and what choices have you for the new name?
