    1. [Carib] This one is really from me
    2. Ann Q
    3. All, Let me begin by saying that I am sorry for the inconvenience any/all have encountered due to this "problem". Secondly, I have not contacted you until now, because I wanted to find out what I needed to do, and not follow my knee-jerk reaction, and say it is not me. I emerged from a two day 102 degree flu coma, to discover I had 26 email that were undeliverable, knew I didn't send them and there was no one else in the house, so I blamed the cat, and deleted them. Later that day my 15 year old granddaughter asked me why I sent her an email for cheap Viagra, and the light bulb turned on. Using her computer I researched the solution, and followed the instruction from Microsoft. FYI,, I run 3 virus-scans at all times, can't use my computer after 11pm, because they start at midnight and run, one after the other until 5 am. I also have an additional one that at all times that will alert me at once. I do not have a facebook, my space, I do not twit or IM and I very seldom 'forward' an email, as a matter of fact, it is one of my pet peeves. I have a McAfee website alert, that will tell me if a site is ok. I think I have done my due diligence. Still this happened. Any so, per instructions, I did 3 full scans and found nothing, All I know is that my email contact list has been 'jacked! The other advise is to change my user name and passwords. With the ones I can remember, I did, however, that made me angry, I feel cornered, and all I want to do is hunker down in the tall grass and wait to get them, guess I am human after all. What I have decided to do is, continue to use my old user name, everyone that I am in contact with, know it, But you also know that I never contact you without a reason, so there will ALWAYS be something in the subject line. You also know why I contact you, is it personal, genealogy, gardening, etc. so if you see something from me that does not jive, please scan it if you can and report it to your email customer service, or delete it. I would also ask, if you can remember, let me know what other user name, other than Ann Q, you received this crap from, it will help me change those usernames. Again, I am so, so very sorry that this happened, and so, so very ANGRY. ANN Ps, I am doing some other things, that I can not discuss, but I am trying my best to fis, it, I would advise all to run a deep virus and malware scan "Sharing the information." 3. Hi John I entirely agree with you that we must ourselves accept the prime responsibility for Internet security on our own computers. A friend of mine reserves the use of one address solely for communicating with another family history List, so that it can be changed if necessary without the need to notify every other active contact in his address book. My own security software also keeps nasties to a minimum, but the junk-mail I received from "Ann Q" used her correct address, which I am reluctant to add to my banned list. Even so, I broke two personal rules in clicking on the link it contained: 1. Be wary of opening e-mails with blank subject lines (I was considering writing to Ann first) 2. Be very wary of clicking on hyperlinks unsupported by a satisfactory covering message but I must now add a third rule 3.Leave to the morning (when my judgement is more acute) dealing with any e-mail falling into categories 1 &/ or 2 Best wishes Peter Moll On 28/01/2010 07:52, markoe <markoejohn519@gmail.com> wrote: I've had posts for many years at Rootsweb and many other sites. I've been using the free versions of Avast (which scans email) and Windows Defender for several years now and install updates whenever they are available (usually daily). The junk mail has gone down to maybe one or two every now and then. Perhaps good security maintenance is the key to staying safe - and it goes without saying I never open attachments from unknown sources (although it seems I'm missing out on millions of unclaimed dollars!). 3. Wow, not sure I can explain them properly, but have used them all. News groups are "Usenet" and 99% are not moderated at all. Spammers love them. I tried an experiment 3 years back where I put out a GMail address of mine ONCE.........I still get a minimum of 50 spam emails a day at that address. Lists and Forums are much the same and I am a Moderater on the British Genealogy one, where I am responsible for Cumberland, UK and a small West Indian one. They are by registration only and are heavily protected against spam or weirdos. I have the ability to cancel or change anything posted on there, along with the other Super Mods......so even the sneaky spammers do not get through. Another problem with Rootsweb, unless it has changed, is that spammers can easily view the list of members and grab the real email addresses. So in short, Rootsweb should get out of the Dark Ages and close ranks against these spammers. I am also on several antivirus and malware forums and with each one you not only have to register, but be approved. They are far better than any others. But I hate change, lol. See your address below?? That is showing up on the soc.genealogy.west-indies news group........and freely available to any spam robots that are roaming news groups. The best way to try and stem some of the spam is to have Rootsweb close the door to Usenet. But that has been an ongoing debate for eons. Hope I made this easier to understand, but other than a couple of Microsoft ng's, along with malware and jewellery ones, I stick to Forums. Cheers.......Heather (and I just checked Rootsweb, which runs your List and it is wide open to spammers....8-((( <lwa101@comcast.net> wrote in message news:mailman.112.1264607023.1999.caribbean@rootsweb.com... > Okay, I'll bite. 1. [Carib] [Carib-L] Warning - Emails from "Ann Q"
    2. Spring
    3. If you receive an e-mail from "Ann Q" with a blank subject line and containing only a hyperlink, I suggest you delete it at once. I was foolish enough to let my curiosity overcome my suspicion and was taken to a spamming web site when I clicked on the link. I quickly exited it, but I will have to consider changing my e-mail address if the spammers have now harvested my address as well. News that those dirty tricksters have misused her good name and contacts will be particularly bad news for Ann, I am sure. Sorry, Ann, . Peter Moll Tortola, BVI

    3. Hi Chris.......you are right in assuming it comes from the soc.genealogy news groups. That is where I both read and post to the Carib List. That said......I have not used my real address on news groups for 5 years at least. They are continually *harvested* by spambots on here. But unfortunately for you, your Carib List posts, complete with their REAL addresses are on here and that is why you get the spam. See yours below my post?? How come your list is on here?? I can't think of any other genealogy List that is. I am a Moderator on Brit-Gen, and that is a Forum, not a List. No spam on that one. I don't think any other Rootsweb ones are on here, but no longer read genealogy ng's other than this one. Rather like the chicken and the egg, I suppose........but why not ask Rootsweb to disassociate the List from the news groups.......there are not all that many posts via the ng's. I believe this has come up a few times before, but due to the insane amount of spam on Usenet, they should listen to you. Cheers........Heather Figueroa "CM Codrington" <cmcod@optimum.net> wrote in message news:mailman.99.1264568120.1999.caribbean@rootsweb.com... > > > Hi Peter > unfortunately the filters at ancestry/Rootsweb are not perfect lately. > > I am not sure there is much I can do to block it as the machinery on my > admin side is very simple...all I can do is verify their apparent address > is > off the subscriber's list. 3. Hi All, There has been a bit in the media here (Australia) regarding (our) computers being used as 'Zombies' to churn out spam etc.  Have no idea how to avoid getting infected other than logging off  the network when not actively online.    Ask your provider about it.   I'm using dialup, yep slow as.. but at least my computer get turned off when I'm not using it.
