    1. RE: Diary of a St Vincent Missionary
    2. Ernest M. Wiltshire
    3. Hello Kevin: many thanks indeed for that wonderful transcription of your ancestor's St. Vincent Diary. My own late father was a Methodist minister, whose first posting overseas after the seminary, was St. Vincent, and we arrived there when I was three, just abut 125 years after your great great grandfather! I am finding it a fascinating read, since as a child of the Manse myself, all the places he names bring back wonderful childhood memories. Thank you so much for sharing this delightful journal with us. Ernest M. Wiltshire Friends of the Barbados Archives 38 Inglewood Place, Ottawa, Ontario Canada K1Y 4C7

    3. Dear Ann, Thank you for the help I guess what I don't understand is if I go to the website familysearch and look for the name I am searching for and nothing comes up has it searched through theses films we are discussing as well or does the LDS not have everything since they have such an immense collection on computer? Would these films contain separate information? Also if you do find it online if you order the microfilm does it contain more information than what is online or is the same information. I had found one relative listed having a child we did not know about and I saved the film number but now when I go to the same reference on familysearch they have deleted the film number. I am sorry for all the questions but I think because of my lack of knowledge on this matter I am probably overlooking a vital resource. Thank you and best wishes, Karen Lombard ----- Original Message ----- From: Ann Whiting To: CARIBBEAN-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, May 01, 2003 3:16 PM Subject: Re: name question Dear Jeff, If you have access to a LDS/Family History Library, go to www.candoo.com, under Microfilms, you will see St. Lucia, I believe in the Leeward Islands, it should have all the film numbers for what the LDS/FHL has available for St. Lucia. 3. Dear Nevilla, Was Jennings the name of the estate? Do you know their reason for naming it this way? Best wishes, Karen ----- Original Message ----- From: Nevilla E. Ottley To: CARIBBEAN-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, April 16, 2003 12:30 PM Subject: OTTLEY in BARBUDA I have been searching for information on the Ottley family in the island of Barbuda. Tim Anderson sent me the following statements: "I have 2 copies of a book that is essentially a catalog of letters -- The Codrington Correspondence. This branch of Codringtons had some estates in Antigua -- notably Betty's Hope-- and essentially all of Barbuda (I thought this was an overstatement, but it is not). Over 500 documents are cataloged and summarized from the 1740s to the 1840s. I have been more interested in the period after manumission (where my personal collection of Antigua correspondence picks up). The early letters certainly mention buying slaves as well as consideration of freeing slaves (in the 1700s in Barbuda). The main concern of the 18th C letters were sea battles in the West Indies with France and Spain. "Two letters in 1814-15 from a slave John Edwards seeking to buy his freedom in the first letter and sending thanks in the second -- the second letter endorsed by "CBC" [Christopher Bethell Codrington] 'My servant when I am in Antigua whom I manumitted' "I found an Ottley letter in the book 1809 George W. Ottley of Parham House gives his advice on the selling of Codrington estates, Bolans and Jennings." The note was signed, "Tim in Gaithersburg" Does anyone have any further information on the activities of George W. Ottley and Christopher Bethell Codrington in the island of Barbuda or Antigua? 3. No problem, The following is from the Guadaloupe page.:- Ste-Lucie (Saint Lucia): recensements 1730 - 1789 1098215 What it means is the census records for St. Lucia for the years 1730-1789 are on film # 1098215 of the Latin American film collection. Here's some background, the Mormans have filmed/microfilmed original documents all over the world, of census, church, civil records, etc, pertaining to genealogy. That information is housed in Salt Lake, Utah. At any Family History Libraries, you can rent a copy of any of their film for viewing at their sites, (they have viewers). You can view the original document on film. So, if your relative was in St. Lucia at that time, and was counted in the census, then you will find them, and any other information that was gathered at that time, re their census. I also gave you another link to St. Lucia, but I had forgotten that It was a French possession at one time. Let me know if this helps. I would like to look for my g-g-g grandfather, Charles Woods, b. abt. 1750, to see if he received his education and/or medical degree from there. (He died in 1810 in St. Croix). The U. library has a website, but the cost of just looking to see if he were a student or not seems really steep. Anyone have friends in Edinburgh? Please contact me directly at lwa101@bellsouth.net. Thanks in advance. Best, Laura Nothin' could be finah than to be in Carolina in the springtime!

    3. The following is part of a reply from the PRO on the East Indians to the West Indies The biographical information relating to indenture labourers can be found in the Colonial Office: West Indies original correspondence in record series reference of the National Archives (TNA) PRO CO 318. It contains specific sections devoted to Indian labour and migration to the West Indies for the period 1843 to 1873; these are continued in (TNA): PRO CO 323 and later in the Immigration Department records (TNA): PRO CO 571 for the period 1913-1920. From the 1870's the records of the Land Board and Emigration Department (TNA): PRO CO 384-CO 386 with registers in (TNA): PRO CO 428) are concerned with emigration to the West Indies and include information on Indian migrant labour. The (TNA): PRO CO 384 and (TNA): PRO CO 385 includes surgeon's reports sometimes give details of the births and deaths of Indians on the ships. Only first names of the Indian labourers have been noted in these records. These are not complete. There is no name index to these records, therefore searching for information on individuals are extremely difficult. Emigration agents were appointed in India to recruit labourers. The indenture labourers had to fill the contract of service forms. It is possible that the records created by these agents if they had survived may be found in the State Archives of India. In India, the ports of Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras were the main platforms used to transport the labourers to colonies. Please contact the appropriate State Archives in India if you know, the origin of their place from which they left to St Lusia. The State archives addresses are as follows. 1. 2 ships of East Indians to Guadeloupe 1867
    2. Richard B. Shiva-Ram Cheddie
    3. I returned from St. Croix this morning, where I found the following concerning East Indians sent to Guadeloupe. From the St. Croix Avis Tue 12 Feb 1867 Guadeloupe - January 14. The Barham [italicized] from India, with 465 immigrants, arrived on the 2nd, at Pionte-a-Pitre. The Commercial [italicized] states that a dysenteric death having occurred a day before the ship arrived, she was placed into quarantine d'observation [italicized], for seven days, as a measure of prudence. The captain of the Glenlora [italicized], which arrived about a month ago with a batch of coolies has been getting into a scrape with the Guadeloupe Authorities. The papers say that, on arrival, both himself and the surgeon of the ship reported that no sickness existed on board, nor had there been any deaths on the passage. But, afterwards, their assertions proved untrue, and they were brought before the Police Magistrate and sentenced to 5 days' imprisionment, and to pay a fine of 60 francs. The Commercial [italicized] remarks on this subject:- "Let us thank heaven, that these fraudulent declarations, made with the view of escaping the ennui [italicized] of a long quarantine, are not permitted. This novel lesson will not be lost. It proves that danger prowls continually around us, and, far from our sleeping at our post, let us redouble our precautions."

    3. Hi Kevin, Thank you for posting your transcription of the diary of your great, great grandfather, the Rev. William FIDLER. It was a lot of work but must have been a labour of love studying and transcribing your ancestor's writings. There are many religious reflections, however, it provides an excellent description of the life and times in St. Vincent in the 1820's. It will take many visits to the site to thoroughly absorb the all information and identify the names and places. Your mention of J. D. QUESTEL is of interest. This must be James Dolbert QUESTEL, Esquire (ca 1772 - 19 Apr 1828) - a Planter and owner of Mount Alexander Estate 300 acres in St David's Parish - met/married Mary Letise OTTLEY. They had seven children of which two tie in to my Family. Any ideas? > Bonjour I have : Laurence Euphrosine PARIGAU, born 1790, married Pierre Joseph BENECH (dead 16 feb. 1866 St Pierre, Le Mouillage) In the french records of St Lucia for some death appear PARIGAU(D) père (father) négociant (merchant) and PARIGAU(D) fils (son) but without first names. I think you will find something in the LDS' microfilms at St Pierre, Le Mouillage. Could you give me the informations recorded on the birth certificate ? About RENAULT : a lot of records in St Lucia. 3. Here is a link to that information.. http://www.caribbeanconsulting.com/Saba/Will/Appendix5.htm Henry Hassell -----Original Message----- From: MReilly169@aol.com [mailto:MReilly169@aol.com] In the back of one of the editions of Will Johnson's "Saban Lore," there is a list of freed slaves (I thought it dated from 1867 rather than 1863) with family names and numbers in household but not first names. It used to be posted on the Internet and I have it somewhere.

    3. An idea about the meaning of the name "Ma Pysan". If it was used in St Vincent, could it be said to be in French creole patois? Would it be pronounced sounding almost like "paysan", which is the French word for peasant, rustic, country-man or country-woman. That may refer to her peasant origin. 3. Hello: From Dr. Hartog's "History of Saba" Emancipation on Saba took place on July 1 1863 with the Abolition of Slavery Act of the Netherlands. The preliminaries had already taken place. With out any ceremony Moses Leverock (Administrator or Lt. Gov of Saba) informed the 730 Saban slaves that they were free. The former owners were indemnified with 200 guilders per slave. When was slavery abolished there? My great great grandmother, Present Derrick, was said to have come to St Vincent via Saba and was known affectionately as "Ma" Pysan. Does anyone know the origins of this name or if it was a familiar one on either Saba, Bequia, or St Vincent. Could it have been a place name? She came to the West Indies from Africa when she was 7 years old, circa 1820-1840
