    2. Hi Dick, Many thanks for checking for me. If I get lucky enough to get as far back as your source, I will be thrilled!!! I have now begun to focus on Martinique, so hope I make some progress once I understand the various sources available. Also thanks for the info on Edwin Alcee. You did send me that a while ago now (must be 2 years or so) and at the time I did not have a connection, as the only Edwin I was aware of was a couple of generations out. However, I do now know the Edwin Alcee you have. He is part of another branch of the family, who I am now in touch with. Much appreciated. Regards, Penny

    3. Hi Penny, My source for Martinique census records covers only the 1600s thru abt 1730, and none of your names of interest appear. The only name even close is a Flamand BERNES, 35y, in the 1680 census (while your BERNEZ family was, I gather, still in France). Nevertheless, BERNES is in the Compagnie du Sr. DE VERPRE and resides in the house of Pierre ALBERT & family. (In the index, the name BERNES is followed by "N!" I can't find an explanation for this in the book, and my French is too poor for me to infer what it might mean.) I do have an Edwin ALCEE who was a witness at the 1902 marriage in Castries, St. Lucia between my wife's granduncle James DE JORNA and Wilhelmina LEVEXIER. Sorry I wasn't able to be more helpful. Regards, Dick in Princeton, NJ

    3. Hi Penny, I have just been in touch with some-one who has just returned from Paris, doing research on Martinique records. Let me know if you would like me to pass on your email. Richard ----- Original Message ----- From: <PennyKilbane@aol.com> To: <CARIBBEAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, May 17, 2003 12:56 PM Subject: Martinique & St.Lucia - SYLVESTRE, BERNEZ & ALCEE Hi Dick, Philippe and Karen (please see note to you at the end of this mail), I noted with great interest the discussions between Karen Lombard, Dick Meyers and Philippe Rossignol on St.Lucia and Martinique families. So far I have focused my research primarily on St.Lucia and have gone through a number of LDS films etc. However, I have not yet started to look at Martinique, which is where I hope you can help, if you are able and have the time to do a couple of look-ups for me. Otherwise any advice would be most appreciated, to get me moving in the right direction. Here are my areas of interest: 1) Uranie-Pierre SYLVESTRE, born Ducos, Martinique. I have no DOB, but she was married in St.Lucia in 1871 (to Samuel BERNEZ), so estimate born 1840 to 1850? 2) Samuel BERNEZ, born in France, but residing in Martinique around 1860. 3) ALCEE (Alcée). I have very little information, but understand that there were two brothers who came to St.Lucia 1740 to 1780 from Martinique (originally from France). 4) Rene Louis MORTEAU. In St.Lucia the mid to late 1700''s. Not sure whether there is a connection with Martinique here. Karen, We've been in touch before, as we both research the name BONNETT / BONNET. Please note that on the LDS film 1093929 ~ 1764 there are a lot of DE BERNARDS. Also on the same film there are lots of BONNETS in Soufriere ~ 1751 to 1788 (I have no detail, but just made a brief note on some surnames I recognised). 2. Richard Allicock
    3. Thanks Laura. Actually they allow any-one to look up the documents with the usual precautions against damage to the materials. You have to discuss the nature of your research with the staff before beginning. No food and drink allowed, no ink pens. Cameras are allowed but no flash. Photcopying of bound material not allowed. Much of the material is in old German script, so one will have to get some-one who understands old German, and even most young Germans don't. They can do a look-up for you and this will cost $50, every time you ask. Any detailed research has to be negotiated in relation to cost. 3. Hi Ann, Thanks again. Looking forward to see what you and James can dig up. I do recall using a general book some years ago that dealt with all the Missionary efforts in the Caribbean, South and Central America. There was some material in there on the Moravians. I will have to go through my files and look-up that book again. Meanwhile I have also written the Moravian Archives in Germany. I will see what they have to say. Cheers! If you have an actual Ships Ticket and you have a scanner, can you send a copy of your ancestor's so I can see what an actual one looks like. I can send you what a copy looks like. I also have a link to website that has a 56 page document of Danish/Dutch West Indian archival material. Let me now if you have seen it. If not I can send the link to you. Regards, Richard.

    3. Hi Listers: The following is an item I found in an online genealogy newsletter. I hope you'll find it useful. Dorothy Article on Using the Google Search Engine for Genealogy ======================================================= The Internet is one big encyclopedia if you know how to find the information being sought. This is especially true of genealogical research. What databases are on the web relating to my family history research? How do I order records from the British Public Records office? Is there any information on my ancestral towns? One of the best search engines is Google at http://www.google.com. Using a search engine is a skill. Often you must judiciously choose key words to assure that sites of interest to you appear on the first page of the search results. Kimberly Powell, a professional genealogist and member of the Association of Professional Genealogists has written on article on how to use the Google search engine.
