Hi Richard. Remember I said I was unsure of how Roy Vialet was related to me? Well I pulled out the family reunion booklet that my cousin gave me and I found Roy Sr. He is my grandmother's 1st cousin. In looking for Roy, has a son named Roy Jr. (deceased) and Kurt. I also found a few other Kurts (and Roy's). I think this Kurt is the son of Aubrey Vialet, the last 13 Vialet children. I also read the book over again and found several other Vialets that moved to St. Croix and are still living there today. Thanks for the spark! Thanks to your tip, I filled a couple of holes just going over that booklet again. Hi listers, I have come to the end of the East Indian Indenture Immigration W.I. thread. I must once again thank all those who participated. I would like us to explore other threads for other groups of people however minor. The ones I have in mind are the German Indentured, the Maltese Indentured and the African Indentured. In relation to these three, I am particularly interested in where they came from, where they went in the various colonies, and what happened to them. Did many die, did many or most leave, did many stay, did they leave their mark in terms of names of towns or villages, and family names in the various colonies? In the case of the African Indentured, I a very interested in the names of the tribes and where they came from in Africa. We can also try to deal with Inter-Colonial migrants after the Emancipation of the Slaves. Later we can also deal systematically with Jews, Walloons, and Huguenots. I would also like us to take a look at African origins of the slaves in the slavery period. We have already touched upon the Germans and the Jews and the West African origins of most of the slaves. However in regard to the latter, I am particularly interested in the mention of particular tribes in the history of the various colonies. I would like us to also identify where in West Africa these tribes came from in terms of the territories back then and where these tribes or territories are now in terms of present day countries. So please focus your memories, dust off your reference materials, revisit relevant websites and extract the relevant information in regard to the various groups mentioned above. Looking forward to your continued participation in regard to any of the above.

Thank you Richard!!! My grandmother, Juliette F. Vialet-Potter's father was Lionel E. Vialet. He had 8 brothers and 2 sisters. The youngest child, Aubrey Vialet has two children, Kurt and Sandra Vialet. I suspected Kurt was living in St. Croix because our family was recently struck with a tradgedy. Roy Vialet, Jr., at age 15, was struck down by a hit and run motorist and died. I saw Kurt's name in the obituaray. I still have not clarified how Roy Vialet Sr. and his family is linked to us, but my grandmother tells me yes, he is a cousin of ours. I saw several of my uncles' names in the obiturary too, including Susthens Vialet. I also saw an ad in the St. Croix Avis June 26 issue where a woman named Wanda Marisa Figueroa-Vialet was thanking her family for supporting her (she was voted Teacher of the Year 2003 for the Ricardo Richards Elementary School on St. Croix). She listed Kurt Vialet as her husband. I didn't know that Kurt worked at HOVENSA though! Thanks alot! Now I know where I can contact him and also can include his profession in my notes. Every little bit helps. THANKS! By the way, where are you from Richard? Monifa Kurt is my grandmother's cousin. Kurt's father is Aubrey Vialet, my grandmother's uncle. There could have been Russells in Antigua. My line of Russells were in Barbados from around that period of time, or earlier. I know of some members of the family that migrated to Antigua, but that was in the mid/late 1800's. David Bladen

Hello Monifa, (is that your name?) One of the names you're researching is Vanterpool. You didn't say in which island they are supposed to have been. Just want to say that the name originally probably was spelled Vanderpoel, which is a common Dutch surname. I suggest therefore that you include Vanderpoel in your search. The name was probably spelled more like it sounds in English at a later time. While he was living here in Boston I was a close friend of HH Miangul Adnan Aurangzeb Crown Prince of Swat. His family knew Jinnah well and what he had said of him was that he was from a family of Moslems but was an Atheist. Prince Adnan studied Electronic Engineering incognito at Northeastern U. here in Boston then worked first for an engineering software firm. When that company moved to North Carolina he moved back to Islamabad. When the Bhuttos took power he then returned here where he next attempted to export ships to the breakers in Pakistan. He ended up as Assistant Manager of Tweeters Harvard Sq. selling Bang & Olufson to software and internet tycoons. He returned to Pakistan after the Bhuttos were out and entered politics rising to MP. I heard that there was recent a shakeup, he may have reentered International trade. If he ever move back to the States Tweeters has a standing job offer for him at HQ.
Hi Joan-Marie, If you are asking if the Barbados Museum and Historical Society's Journal go back to 1686, the answer is no. The Journal only started in 1933. However, extracts from Newspapers of B'do families and affairs from 1783-1870 have been covered by Vols. 1-33 of the Society's Journal. But this is outside your relevant period. On the presence of a Synagogue in St. Michael's, this might be the one in Bridge-town, for which the cemetary has been restored and information on the monuments recorded. Here is a link with publications and persons to contact for further information. http://www.jewishgen.org/cemetery/atl-caribbean/barbados.html On the question about whether actual wills are available, you can certainly request a copy from the Archives, using the references in Sanders. But I doubt if you will get a copy of the original will because: "There exists in Barbados three series of Wills - original wills, wills record books and wills re-copied record books. The original wills are very imperfect before 1723, and only reasonably complete from about 1800. Fortunately the series of record books, though incomplete, dates from 1650 and, with the re-copied books forms an almost complete record of wills from that date, although some of the copies are not very accurately transcribed. There is an index referring to both series, with occasional references to original wills." This is from the Barbados Dept. of Archives Factoid on Population Records. It is possible that Sanders recorded Jew merchant by mistake but I doubt it. It is also possible that the copying and recopying might have been the source of the a msitake which Sanders followed. You might want to cross-check it against records of Assessment of Rate Books which for St. Michaels go from 1683/5 - 1716; 1722-1729; 1749-1765. But this might involve getting a paid researcher, which can be recommended to you by the Department of Archives. You might also want such a researcher to look in the Jewish Registers which go from 1660 forward. I hope this all helps. Regards Richard
I've restyled and updated my website with family information, but also some data that hopefully help others. Specialy who game from the Netherlands, I put a lot of pictures of village and city's from the Netherlands in my homepage. I hope you like it. Also you can find a lot of addresses for free genealogic software. Have a nice day Jan Brugge http://members.home.nl/jbrugge/
Was there a RUSSELL Family in Antigua, circa 1735? Thanks, Vince Summers
Jinnah (as in Mohammed Ali) was actually an abbreviation. I think his name was originally Jinnahbhai. Also I think it was of Persian origin, so not necessarily Muslim (could be Parsi). Other Jinnahs may be different.
Hi Ann! I'm ready to purchase my own cesus documents now. I'd like them on CD. Where did you get yours? I saw some at http://www.genealogy.com/uscensussub.html but I want to be sure that the U.S. census that I buy includes USVI. I'd also like some BVI census. Would that be under U.K.? relative of yours Richard?
In an email dealing with Turobunsingh, of 19/06/03, I added: "One name I also checked out with Indians - which they could not elucidate - was a name I found apparently spelt Gaiina. If you think you or any-one on the list can figure it out let me know. Thanks." Since no-one has attempted to solve the riddle by this time, I will. At a first approximation we can try Gai+ina or Guy+ina, or Gay+ina, no bells ring. We can try Guy+na or Gay+na there was some resonance with the -na. But then it occurred to me that the "G" can also carry a "J" sound as in Gin (the alcohol, the cotton Ginny, or "G" in Engine, and Gaol for Jail). Trying the "J" sound we get Jai/Ji or Jay. Putting this together with -na, we get Ji-na or Jay-na. This sounds like Jin-nah an actual muslim name. For reference purposes we can remember Mohamed Ali Jinnah, the Founder of Pakistan. The Gaii was a transliteration that attempted to capture more of the "Ji" than the "Jay" sound.
There probably are such names. I mentioned Busbee, Busby and Busbyr from the Bengali names list. The English Busby is pronounced Buzbi or Bus+be. The above three Bengali names are probably pronounced Boosbee or Boosebe and Boosbeeer or Boosebeeer in Bengali. ----- Original Message ----- From: <MReilly169@aol.com> To: <CARIBBEAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 30, 2003 6:32 AM Subject: Re: East Indian Indenture Immigration W.I.
