    3. >Emily, On the Ellis Island site there is a family with a 2 year old Edwin Cheeseborough from Havana Cuba landing in NY in 5 May 1922. He is with his mother Mercedes Cheesborough age 20y and brother William 2 months. The ship came from Mexico and was called the Mexico. Since at that time many Jamaicans went to Cuba, and then left Cuba for other places have you considered this record as a possible? I could not however get the full Original manifest to show on the screen which indicates who they left in the departing country. All three are identified as British African. You might need to do some research in Cuba before getting back to the British West Indies. 2. Dow
    3. Macky: Christian is a common name in most of the English-speaking Caribbean. The Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico have had much movement of workers and students back and forth. I looked in the Danish Demographic Database (http://ddd.dda.dk/soeg_stcroix.html) for the U.S. Virgin Islands (formerly the Danish West Indies) and found several Richard Christians. I imagine you will find more with variations in spelling. Do you have any other information, a date of death, church record of marriage or death, etc. which might give you a bit more info? If you assume that your Richard was close to the age of his wife, he could have gone to Puerto Rico in the mid 1800s. 3. St. Lucia is in the Windward Islands north west of Barbados and north of St. Vincent. It was colonized by the French but they lost the island to the British during the French Revolution then by treaty in 1815. The British then established a major naval base there at the port of Castries.

    3. There is a large family by that name living in the Virgin Islands. I do not now whether there is a connection but I do know that as the St. Croix sugar industry went into a decline in the early 1800s and then collapsed with emancipation in 1848 a lot of Cruzan planters bought plantation land in Puerto Rico. The Spaniards opened up new areas for grants and Puerto Rican planters sold older lands. A lot of these older haciendas were ranchos raising cattle were relatively flat and they could be replanted in cane. The newer grants were limited to connected Catholics but older lands if held in fee could be purchased by people of any denomination or religion.
