    3. Hi David I will experiment with scanning the pertinent sections of "History of A" this weekend. If successful (they are large and heavy) will send you sections on Willoughby and parts of the Historical narrative pertinent to the Willoughbys. I don't know what you are searching for but there is a lot to cover with them. Several Governor Generals of the "Caribee Islands" Their activities span crucial Wars and their administrative powers covered a broader area than most of the later Gov Generals. Politics was volatile and alliances were changing every day I remember the first time I read a narrative about them and after a brisk description of a particular W's service it would say "and Gov ----Willoughby died replaced by -----Willouughby and so on as if there was this cache of Willoughbys in the wings as replacements. When you start trying to nail things down it gets quite confusing because not everyone specifies which Willoughby is Which! Anyway if this helps let me know. Olivers is larger than the scanner so I am not sure how it will go with half page scans etc. Cod -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. So I am reduced to requesting and reading (and sometimes photocopying) the originals (or, very occasionally, microform), though it goes against the grain to add to the wear and tear. 3. Oh dear! Hello Evan! this may be somewhat belated, but I take the liberty on behalf of the entire List of welcoming you to the list. You are probably right: we get so caught up in our own little research projects that we tend to gloss over anything unconnected to our own special interests. I imagine it must be difficult hunting for names such as Smith, but one has to try. Have you had an opportunity to check Oliver's History of Antigua or Caribbeana for any possible mention of your family? I shall take a look at the index looking for information on the name and whether there is any mention of epidemics circa 1861: I doubt that it would have been plague. It is more likely to have been cholera, which hit Barbados in 1854, and I do know that islands such as St. Thomas & Nevis were also severely hit, but I don't know whether Antigua was also. It could also have been yellow fever, which also struck Barbados in 1855. Cod probably knows more about the situation in Antigua Ernest M. I guess if no one has relations or interests to what others do--they don't get even a "Boo". Am I feeling sorry for myself?--YES. Never mind though, it's OK. I am searching for information on my great-grandfather, John SMITH (SMYTH) who was born in Antigua in 1847. This has been a brick wall for me for quite some time. I do not know his parents' names, but his father was a government overseer of some kind. Family lore has it that in 1861 the Black Plague took John Smith's parents, so he and his sister (Lillian??) were taken to England. John was placed in a Catholic Home and never saw his sister again. I know that he emigrated to the US in 1869. From there I have the rest of the story. Any hints as to where to get more info would greatly be appreciated. 3. Thanks all I just went to the local library to make some inquiries...have to check tonight to see if their special code gets me what I want. Lue, thanks if I can't do it any other way I would very much appreciate your help. I have about 8 articles that are very promising for me and they pop up on J stor in reference to several things I search on all the time. Either way must find some associate membership in a local university library because some of the stuff I want to study requires long term browing such as Notes and Queries and Oxford Journals.... I haven't had much freedom lately to take trips and poke around at universities but this too shall pass. Seek and yee shall find. Gotta think outside the box hee hee. 3. Cod, I think you can go to a university library and throw yourself on the mercy of the reference librarian to have them print off articles out of JSTOR. AFter all, they've already paid for the subscription. The community college library where I used to work had that subscription, but only usable on campus. Good stuff in it.
