    3. A quick response, before going to bed! As you probably know, both Scatliffe and Todman are long-established, common names in the BVI. The 1798 Tortola Plantation Map shows three estates owned by Thomas Todman and a Mrs Scatliffe growing sugar on another one, while there were three Scatliffes and a Todman living in the African Location in Kingstown in 1831. The current BVI white pages lists 47 Scatliffe and 40 Todman subscribers. You really need to do some research in Tortola if you can, as BVI records are scattered around various offices. The General Civil Registry holds records from 1859 onwards. I shall e-mail you a list of "Sources of BVI Family Records" compiled by The Archives Unit in the Deputy Governor's Office. The Public Library may hold a booklet produced for the funeral of Theodocia Valeria Todman if she was buried here. They are often excellent sources of family history. Good luck! 3. The East India Office archives are in the British Library. An online search in the Asia, Pacific and Africa collections using the keyword 'Trinidad' shows a great deal of correspondence but you would have to go through all the online references to see whether any of them might have lists of names - try http://www.a2a.org.uk/search/doclist.asp?nb=0&nbKey=2&com=1&keyword=Trinidad&properties=0601 which gives 28 references, each of which contains up to 25 hits - you would need to click on each one in turn. But much work has been done in Trinidad and Tobago on the subject, and most of the specialists who have researched the subject are there, either in the St Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies or working independently. Shamsu Dean in Trinidad specialises in East Indian genealogy - see his entry on http://www.candoo.com/genresources/ http://www.nalis.gov.tt/exhibits/arrival.htm has a list of books about East Indians in Trinidad, many of which would show starting points for individual family history. 3. Dear Joy, The information for the HEIC is proberbly located at the national archives in London (PRO?). The company had headquarters in Liverpool, Bristol and offices/agents in many of the seaports of England. Lloyds of London might also have information on the ships that departed and arrived at ports, as they were the insurance co. I have no personal information, though my ggm-paternal was indentured from India and remained to marry my ggf. I don't know how the contract was made. Was with it with the person and the company, or the Island govn't and the company? Was it diffrent for each island and each of two companies. My ggm was indentured in the Virgin Islands, which was administered by A Dutch company for the Danish Govn't. I am assuming that the VOC brought in the indentured to the islands they were associatedd with. Unfortunately, she died before my mother was born, so we just have the oral history of ggm's children and contempories. Maybe someone on the list that is in England can take it from here. One final note, don't give up, you can attack this from several angles, maybe the island census for the year, might list his place of birth. 3. Google it. The Honourable East India Company (HEIC), often colloquially referred to as "John Company", and "Company Bahadur" in India, was an early joint-stock company (the Dutch East India Company was the first to issue public stock). It was granted an English Royal Charter by Elizabeth I on December 31, 1600, with the intention of favouring trade privileges in India. The Royal Charter effectively gave the newly created HEIC a 21 year monopoly on all trade in the East Indies. The Company transformed from a commercial trading venture to one that virtually ruled India as it acquired auxiliary governmental and military functions, until its dissolution in 1858 following the events of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of callaloo Sent: Tuesday, December 18, 2007 2:29 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Indentured servants from India in Trinidad or Tobago what is the HEIC? 3. Cindy, Here are some rough dates, and a little background. The VOC which was the Dutch Trading company had a stronghold in India, the British was also the ruling power in the country. In the late 1700's many of the European countries were abolishing slavery, that is, not transporting slaves themselves, which left the two big companies, the VOC and HEIC-the British Trading Company. The British was in control of Trinidad by 1844, and they started to import East Indian Laborers. On May 30, 1845 the first indentured East Indian laborers arrived in Trinidad, and by 1917, 141,615 had been brought in for a period of 5 year indenture. In 1840 the first Chinese indentured laborers were brought in to Trinidad. I would suggest checking the records of the HEIC for that island and that period, possibly there might be some record of his town/village/tribe.
