    3. Thank you all so much for the information! I currently live in the Cayman Islands, so I don't have access to any LDS centres. But we are planning a move to Denver within the next few months and I should be able to look for something then. I found out her mother's maiden name is Oxley (that was on Olive's death records - she died in California in 1981). But I don't know any more than that. I have a few other family members to research who were born in Barbados (SQUIRES), so maybe the LDS records will help me with those too. I have spoken to the General Registrar in Barbados about my Squires family members, and they were kind enough to look up information for me while I was on hold! They gave me everything they had. I will probably end up ordering some of the certificates from them. I haven't yet asked them about Olive Gittens though. Does anyone know where I could find immigration records (to find out when she moved to Trinidad)? I know there are registers of ships on Ancestry.com, but as far as I can tell, they were all going to NY. Thanks again for all the info! Cindy

    3. Cindy,Unfortunately your ggm's birth in 1896 wil not show up in the IGI (The International Genealogical Index); in fact I have already checked. But you can most likely find it on the microfilmed Barbados Records. I don't recognise the name Goin, but it might be familiar to others on this List. I'm not sure where you live, but if you are in any sizable city you should be able to find an LDS (Mormon) Family History Centre. You don't have to be a church member to use the centres; there you can order the microfilmed Barbados records (they will bring in the film from Salt Lake City) and you will have to wade through the baptismal/birth records in the hope of finding Olive's record. They charge a small fee for bringing in the films, but you can usually ask that they hold them for six months to give you time to do the search. If you are lucky enough to find it, and thus find her parents, you may be able to go back another generation, finding the marriage if any. You might then spot other children with the same parents as you go through the film. Since you know the year of birth that already helps you narrow the search; it would be helpful if you knew what Parish she was born in, but I would suggest that you start with St. Philip, St. Michael & St. George as being parishes where Gittens families tend to be concentrated. If that fails you can widen the search to other parishes. I already know of one Gittens family who moved from Barbados to Trinidad about the turn of the century, and it would be interestting if Olive turned out to be a member of that family! Good luck. 1. Charles Brebner, Lucea, Jamaica 1852-1922
    2. Hello all, I'm interested in any information/descendants of Charles William BREBNER who was born in Lucea , Jamaica about 1852. He was a shipmaster who travelled widely and finally settled in Mauritius . >From the Gleaner online I have seen a number of Brebner entries into the 1920s that may well be related to Charles. As well as more details of family that may still live in Jamaica, I'd be interested in any ideas as to whether he took his name from one of the plantation owners or was actually a genetic descendant of one... a tall order! I do know that there was a Dr. William BREBNER, in Jamaica from 1820 to 1861 and he lived in Lucea in 1861.He is the son of William BREBNER and Margaret SIMPSON in Boharm, Morayshire. He would be a likely father... More details: http://www.brebner.com/history/chas_wm_brebner_mauritius.pdf And one final question... if I travel to Lucea in the spring (this Canadian winter is beginning to wear on me!) would I have any problems as a single white (fit and feisty Scottish) man in his mid 50's wandering about the town on this genealogical quest? 3. Hi Laura, Yes the Harcourts are Grey descendants (back a few centuries) the Governor George William Richard Harcourt is reported to have died unmarried. Margaret Irene Sarney whose father must have been in charge of Somerset House (I think then a disused royal residence) may have been murdered by brigands on the way to see her son but before that she married Harcourt and had at least three children then married Molyneux Shuldham (Lord Shuldham) then married John Meade the Earl of Clanwilliam (dunno how many more children she had) so she may have had a taste for adventure! 3. Laura, I know I sent you some information some time ago but not sure if you've seen this before (sometimes my record skips too!). No 21 14.1.1797 Gray Thos.marr.Charlotte their:Elisabeth bapt 17.2.1797 (dutch church) Also, there are a couple of Grays listed at Horlacher's website with Danish West Indies chancery records. 3. Hello everyone. I have just come across a scribbled note (my own scribble) of an extract from Scots in the West Indies (Vol II) by David Dobson. For some reason, I didn't note down what the date actually meant. Can anyone enlighten me? The nearest copy of the book to me is over 100 miles away, so it's difficult to check this myself. The extract reads: Nisbet, David - a merchant in St Kitts, 1776 Any other info on Nisbets from St Kitts (not Nevis) would also be most welcome, if anyone has any. Many thanks.

    3. Happy new year to my fellow listers. I would like to know if anyone has any info on this surname. Dates would be 1800 to 1900. Other family names linked to this one are: Ollivierre, Adams and Derrick just to name a few. Any info would be appreciated so that I can compare it to what I already have. Thanks!
