    3. Recorded as Boutellier in France and as Butler and Buttler in Britain and Ireland, this famous aristocratic surname is of Norman-French origins. It is job descriptive, deriving the Olde French word 'bouteillier,' and meaning "one who supplies the bottles." However Butler or Bouteillier in medieval times defined status in a royal, or at least noble, household..... 3. Thank you Laura, that is very interesting. The Turners are believed to be of a Suffolk family who went to Boston and figure prominently in the history of Massachusetts and New England, and incidentally of Barbados. There are several Johns in the family, but I suspect that this John is the son of Peter, whose brother Robert also went to Boston; it was Robert's son, another Capt. John Turner who built the house made famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne: "The House of the Seven Gables". The John you mention below took up residence in Barbados and died there in 1673. He married Mary Skeete, widow of Ryenold Alleyne and one of their daughters married a Frere, another a Spiar; so the Turners are linked to some of the most important of Barbados families, Alleyne, Skeete, Rouse etc. John's brother Richard also settled in Bdos, & his sister Abigail was also married in Barbados to a planter, William Deeth, and left many descendants, though none name Deeth, as she had only daughters. From my notes: "He was a merchant of Boston, Massachusetts between 1644 and 1649. "On 30 Oct 1647 John Turner and Benjamin Gillom sold the ship "Expectation" and her cargo to Stephen and Adam Winthrop (i.e. sons of Governor John Winthrop of Massachusetts). On 5 (6) 1650 a bill concerning this transaction was given by Mr. Adam Winthrop to Francis Robinson of Barbados, merchant to act for him against John Turner who by this date had settled in Barbados (Aspinall's Notarial Records, pp. 119, 313)." " On 9 Jan 1667/8 he bought of John Turner, mariner of Salem in New England 1/4 part of the new ketch "Speedwell" * then lying in Salem harbour (Essex Co. Mass. deeds)." 2. I thought this a particularly colorful entry. It is from The Journal of John Winthrop, 1630-1649, an account of the founding of New England, which is online at http://tinyurl.com/n2dzgj. The entry's dates are January-February 1642, and it is footnoted thusly: John Turner, a Roxbury merchant, who in Jan. 1640 bought a quarter share in the pinnance St. John, presumably the ship he sailed to the Caribbean: "One John Turner, a merchant's factor of London, had gone from hence to the West Indies the year before in a small pinnace of 15 tons, and returned with great advantage in indigo, pieces of 8, etc. He said he got them by trade, but it was suspected he got them by prize." 3. Hi there, I think that he may just have to find a specific phone card for Guyana, as the regular rates are horrendous. Since my phone service provider _does not connect calls to Guyana_, that is what I use since my relative there does not have a computer. Skype does allow you to call to land lines, but it does cost something to use it that way. What about Vonage?? that may work, Joan Joan T.Seymour, Consultant Lalderson@nc.rr.com wrote: > Hi, I am posting this on behalf of someone else, but come to think > about it, I'd like to know about this, too. 3. ~~If you believe that your individuals were not proprietors, you should look under the name of the others in the family (with different family names), who MIGHT have been proprietors. Many times, in-laws and grandchildren, and even business associates were eligible for indemnification (when the original colonist/proprietor was deceased). The big drawback to this website is that it only lists the names of the original owners/anciens colons, NOT the names of those who stood to inherit. So try looking under related family names. You might get lucky ! Bonne chance! Augusta ----- Original Message ----- > Hi Augusta: > This is a very interesting list.
