His name was Edward Bush (b. abt 1840 in Ohio). The Census was only 4 pages long and had many Chinese or Japanese names, most listed as partners and working as laborers. Edward Bush was a machinist on the Census. Can anyone fill me in on what was Towles Mills? Can someone tell me if it was a mine or textile factory. Have a great day, Charlie Keller ////////////////////// Per CALIFORNIA PLACE NAMES, Gudde, 1949: "Towle [Placer]. The name was applied to the Southern Pacific station in the 1880's. It is shown as Towles on the Mining Bureau map of 1892. Allen and George Towle were early lumbermen on the Dutch Flat divide (Co. Hist. 1924, p. 194)." Based on above, suspect the mill was a sawmill. Next best guess would be a mill to crush ore. Textile mill not likely. Listing of laborers as partners was probably "literary license" on part of census taker. Individuals probably lived on-site in quarters provided by mill owner and would be listed as boarders by other pollsters. Vern D __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
