To John Lester -- I noticed Bethunes were among the surnames you're researching. I have heard that the Smiths who settled near Cameron Hill in west Harnett Co., N.C., were related to the Bethunes in Scotland. My grandmother, Elinor Christian Smith (1869-1955), married James A. Caligan of Moore Co. Elinor's father was William John Smith; her mother, Christian Elizabeth Cameron. William John's father was William Smith, his grandfather John Smith, and his g-grandfather Robin Smith. Robin Smith immigrated from South Uist to N.C., where he met and married a Kate or Joan Crawford near Lobelia in present-day Hoke Co., N.C.
