    1. Re: Scottish Archaeology
    2. The reference to Gabriel Johnston in the article may be a link to one of my Scottish families. A William Cathcart emigrated from Scotland (Ayrshire) to NC . He was born in about 1710, educated in Edinburgh in about 1726 and was a physician and merchant in North Carolina from 1737. He settled on the Roanoke River, Northampton County, N.C. He is supposed to have married Penelope Maule in 1742 and had 4 children, Gabriel, who may have been named after the Governor, and 3 daughters, one of whom (Fanny) married Samuel Johnston. Samuel may have been a son or nephew of Gabriel. Samuel had a plantation near Edenton now called the Hayes Plantation and is buried there with Fanny. Gabriel die unmarried at 26 but managed a visit to see his Scottish relations.
