    3. Jackie McInnis, I have a large article that was in The Fayetteville Observer Times, Sunday Morning, October 7, 1984, page 2E. Titled Scottish Immigrants - The McFadyens by Lucile Johnson. It is five columns and has a sketch of the house of John Fleetwood McFadyen. A few of the items mentioned were: "One of those early Scots who came to the region was Archibald McFadyen, and his descendants have contributed in an unbroken line since 1785. He was born in 1754, son of Daniel McFadyen, on the Island of Islay, Scotland. He arrived in Wilmington in 1785 and came to Fayetteville by way of the Cape Fear River. On March 6, 1788, he received a grant for 100 acres of land. When he died in 1830, he had acquired more than 1,000 acres." It mentions that his home become known as McFadyen Springs. It was willed to his daughter, Flora, who married Daniel Turner. In the 1840s the land was sold to Alexander McPherson. "Archibald McFadyen married Mary Buie (daughter of Catherine Shaw Buie and Archie Buie). They were the parents of Daniel, John Archibald Buie, Flora and Catherine. Mary died Nov. 29, 1800, and in 1806 Archibald married Nancy McNeill, and they were the parents of James, Isabella, Neill, Elizabeth, Mary Ann and Dougald." "Dougald, the youngest child of Nancy and Archibald, was born Nov. 21, 1821. He married Annie Lindsay, daughter of John and Mary Black Lindsay of the Island of Jura in Scotland. Annie was born at sea in 1838 during her parents' passage to America. Dougald was a deacon at Longstreet and taught school, probably in Longstreet Academy." "Dougald and Annie McFadyen were the parents of John Fleetwood, Daniel Graham, Katherine Ann, Neill Lindsay, James Vance, Elizabeth Jane, Effie Turner, Dougald Alexander and Archibald Buie." "John Fleetwood McFadyen, the son of Annie and Dougald McFadyen, was born Sept. 6,1860, the oldest of 11 children." "John Fleetwood married Ursula Howard, whose genealogy has connections with James Fennemore Cooper and Sir Anthony Ashley Cooper, earl of Shaftsbury, one of the eight lords proprietors." "John Fleetwood and Ursula were the parents of 10 children. The oldest was James Scott McFadyen, born in 1890." "He married Hattie Currie of Raeford, and they were the parents of J. Scott McFadyen, Jr. and Zula McFadyen Barton (Mrs. Reginald)." "A great great great grandson of Archibald McFadyen, Reginald M. Barton Jr., an attorney, takes an active part in many historic and civic projects today." Hope that this helps you, Margie Davis Austin
