When I wrote the list the other day to ask about researching a shipwreck story of my scottish grandparents coming to the USA in 1700s many kind people responded. BUT, quite a few warned me that there were many ficticious shipwreck stories made up by the "scottish" immigrants. AND, there were quite a few ficticious stories made up about a fake/missing scottish brother. This made me very interested to know...why did they make these two things up? ONE member of the list joked about wondering what the germans and french etc made up as a constant joke. So, I ask all the experts...what is the story. In my own family lines (osborne) a phoney genealogist around 1930-1950 made up a family tree for us that was totally fake and we are still finding these "facts" in people's trees today!!
