Betsy, I agree! I knew the ancestral files were contributed by church members, but I had read that the IGI files were supposed to have been taken from actual documents, and would be accurate. That is not totally true. On another list a researcher wrote that on the microfiche source number, if the third digit was 5 or higher, the record was taken from actual documents. If it is 4 or less that record was contributed by a church member. I don't know how accurate that statement is, and I have no further information available to me to prove or disprove it. I simply share it as I read it. I have been trying to test it on information that I know for sure, and so far it seems correct. Three IGI Files had one person with the same parents and same birth date being born in 3 different places - in two different states! The one that I think is accurate was the only one of the 3 to pass the test. Maybe someone with knowledge of the church records could help us out here -?
