I am trying to find out the place of birth in Scotland of Dugal Stewart and his son John Stewart. Dugal first appears on a tax list for Duplin County in 1783 as living on land that would later be encompassed in Sampson County. This land was on the eastern bank of the Black River(now called the South River) which forms the border between Sampson and Cumberland Counties. The land was south of Williamson Swamp near present day highway 13 about 10 miles east of Wade NC. Dugal attended the Old Bluff Presbyterian Church which lies on the banks of the Cape Fear River in Cumberland County about 2 miles north of Wade NC. His will dated 1805 list children in the following order: John, Daniel (a blacksmith of Cumberland County), Alexander, Sarah, Allan with John being the executor of the will and the one who inherited the land. Because of this, he is assumed to be the eldest of the children. Two of John's children survived to be listed on the 1870 NC census which was the first census to have a question for indicating whether the parents were foreign born. Both children marked "yes" indicating that John at least was born in Scotland. His date of birth is thought to be around 1762. Any information regarding the location in Scotland that this family originated from would be greatly appreciated. Webster Stewart webstew@prysm.net ster Stewart webstew@prysm.net
