    3. I have seen this same brochure at the NC Archives and wondered if the marker was ever placed. I will contact Gov. MacLean's son and see what he knows about the project. Blake Tyner http://tyner.simplenet.com/millprong

This was a fund raising effort composed of the Robeson and Cumberland County committees of the Colonial Dames of America which were "...promoting the project of erecting, on State Highway No. 22, in or near the present city of Fayetteville, North Carolina, a granite marker in memory of Malcolm Purcell and Beatrice Torrey Purcell, Revolutionary patriots. Former Governor Angus Wilton McLEAN of North Carolina, one of the descendants of Malcolm and Beatrice Torrey Purcell, was involved in this fund raising undertaking on behalf of the Colonial Dames. The granite marker was to be erected near the spot on the Cape Fear River where Malcolm Purcell was allegedly killed in 1776 by the Tories. It was to include a suitable inscription commemorating the patriotic services of "...these early patriots". A few years ago I contacted the Colonial Dames of America via snail mail to try and determine whether the granite marker had ever been erected. To my knowledge there is no record of its existence in Cumberland County. No one with the Colonial Dames had any memory of this project nor were there any extant records or minutes that may reflect on the success of this cause. Surely someone must know something about this effort. Perhaps there is an account in one of the Fayetteville or Lumberton newspapers. Why was the granite marker never erected? It was supposed to have been dedicated, according to the brochure, in late May or early June of 1932 or 1933. Contributions for this project were to be sent to Miss Genevieve McMILLAN of Red Springs, North Carolina. Other members of the committee included:John E. PURCELL of Atlanta, GA who was chairman; Dr. A. E. BAKER of Charleston, S. C.; Walter McNEILL of Lakeland, FL; Mrs. George T. BULLOCK of Red Springs, N. C.; Judge N. A. SINCLAIR of Fayetteville, N. C.; Archibald McEACHERN of Raeford, N. C.; Mrs. Lou FULMORE of Wilson, N. C.; Miss Beatrice SINCLAIR of Raeford, N. C.; and Dr. A. C. BETHUNE of Raeford, N. C. I would appreciate receiving any new leads which I can follow-up to try and unravel this mystery to include any new contacts with the Colonial Dames of America from Cumberland County and Robeson County. On request I will be happy to mail a copy of the brochure which explains in more detail the purposes for which the money was being solicited. Monies were also requested for several grave restorations. Thanks very much for any help offered. 2. Hey Doug, I am not aware of this project but what caught my eye was the participation of Dr. A. C. Bethune of Raeford who is a relative. I am going to forward this to another listing and some other individuals to see if they might have any knowledge. Hopefully someone will be able to answer your question. Thanks John Hilton Lester

    1. McMillan/Murphy/McARTHUR/SMITH
    2. Mary M Lander
    3. Recently had the great fortune to have a cousin I had never met (to our knowledge---maybe when we were children) send me information on my families from the "Cape Fear" area. Archibald McMILLAN/Margaret MURPHY, Peter McARTHUR, Archibald SMITH/Jane McARTHUR, John McARTHUR/Catherine MURPHY. The best that I remember from the information given me these people came from Kintyre, Scotland. Perhaps not SMITH. I was so excited that I still have not taken it all in. They settled in the Robeson Co. NC area (edge of Hoke Co. or perhaps including part). A week or so ago my husband made a quick pass through the area and were treated by a fellow member of Clan MacARTHUR from Red Springs to a ride to see the SMITH cemetery where Archibald and Jane are buried and to another one where some of the other McARTHURS are buried. She and her sons had also sent me information. Have not had a chance yet to visit the one where McMillans and Murphys are buried. This was my second McARTHUR line that I only learned of in the past few years---on my father's mother's side. Wouldn't it be funny if one of these days I found a connection to his dad's ancestors from Dunfermline, FIFE? Not likely, huh? This was such an exciting experience. Years ago I tried so hard to find some of this information without luck---now it just appeared thanks to other people. What I am particularly interested in at this time is any information as to the ship they came on, exactly when (last half of 1700s is as close as I see). Where exactly (or near) did they come from in Kintyre? Is the ship record of their ship listed on the internet yet for us to see the names of others who came together? Does anyone know of siblings who stayed behind in Kintyre and might have descendents still in the area? I am indeed grateful to this cousin and to the others only a bit farther up the line for passing on the information that gave me a fresh start. Just in the past couple of days I have had new information on the Day and Wilkinson sides of my mother's family. Reckon I've been living right or something? Mary DAY McARTHUR LANDER
