    3. Don, I do not know if you are a member of the U.S. Clan Campbell Society, but you might want to write to their genealogist for suggestions regarding researching your family. She may already have some data on file. She may have an e-mail address but I do not have it, so snail mail will have to do. She is: Ms. Ruby G. Campbell, Ph.D., FSA Scot 3310 Fairway Drive Baton Rouge, LA 70809 USA Be sure you tour the Campbell Castle, home of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll. It is very impressive. 3. I'm heading to Scotland in a couple months and am seeking suggestions on making the connection between my great-great-great-grandfather and his place of birth. The life of James Campbell (1756-1842) as a planter and Revolutionary War soldier from Bladen County is well documented. His parentage and birthplace are not, to my knowledge. Many in our family believe his parents were John Campbell and Mary (or Ann) Edwards (born in the 1730s), and that his (James') siblings were Archibald and Martha, but the evidence is flimsy. Since we're not sure where either James or his parents were born, I find the prospect of searching in Scotland rather intimidating. I've consulted several books on the subject and reviewed dozens of websites, but I haven't found anything very encouraging as an answer to the question: If you don't know where someone was born and you're dealing with two of the most common names in Scotland from that era, how to begin? I welcome suggestions, as well as any specific, documented information that might shed light on James parentage. Thanks. Don Campbell donc43@infinet-is.com

    2. Hello, For those of you who are searching for relatives in Scotland and are unable to find any trace of them, please consider that they may have migrated to either Canada, Nova Scotia, New Zealand or to North Carolina. If you send a query to CAPE-FEAR-SCOTS-L@rootsweb.com maybe you will find someone also looking for the same connection in North Carolina. Good luck John Lester

    1. new geneology site
    2. Hello. I was listening to National Public Radio Monday and there was a story announcing the largest geneology web site ever opened sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints. Monday was the launch date. The address is www.familysearch.org I tried tonight for the first time and the was actually a 39 minute que and limiting people to 15 minutes because of the heavy demand. I believe the story said it has a data base of 5 million names. Give it a try. This is my first contribution and I hope it helps everyone. I enjoy the Cape Fear group so much. Thank you to all contributors! Best Regards, Jim McPhail

    1. Re: Scottish Archaeology
    2. The reference to Gabriel Johnston in the article may be a link to one of my Scottish families. A William Cathcart emigrated from Scotland (Ayrshire) to NC . He was born in about 1710, educated in Edinburgh in about 1726 and was a physician and merchant in North Carolina from 1737. He settled on the Roanoke River, Northampton County, N.C. He is supposed to have married Penelope Maule in 1742 and had 4 children, Gabriel, who may have been named after the Governor, and 3 daughters, one of whom (Fanny) married Samuel Johnston. Samuel may have been a son or nephew of Gabriel. Samuel had a plantation near Edenton now called the Hayes Plantation and is buried there with Fanny. Gabriel die unmarried at 26 but managed a visit to see his Scottish relations.

    2. Margie D. Austin
    3. Jackie McInnis, I have a large article that was in The Fayetteville Observer Times, Sunday Morning, October 7, 1984, page 2E. Titled Scottish Immigrants - The McFadyens by Lucile Johnson. It is five columns and has a sketch of the house of John Fleetwood McFadyen. A few of the items mentioned were: "One of those early Scots who came to the region was Archibald McFadyen, and his descendants have contributed in an unbroken line since 1785. He was born in 1754, son of Daniel McFadyen, on the Island of Islay, Scotland. He arrived in Wilmington in 1785 and came to Fayetteville by way of the Cape Fear River. On March 6, 1788, he received a grant for 100 acres of land. When he died in 1830, he had acquired more than 1,000 acres." It mentions that his home become known as McFadyen Springs. It was willed to his daughter, Flora, who married Daniel Turner. In the 1840s the land was sold to Alexander McPherson. "Archibald McFadyen married Mary Buie (daughter of Catherine Shaw Buie and Archie Buie). They were the parents of Daniel, John Archibald Buie, Flora and Catherine. Mary died Nov. 29, 1800, and in 1806 Archibald married Nancy McNeill, and they were the parents of James, Isabella, Neill, Elizabeth, Mary Ann and Dougald." "Dougald, the youngest child of Nancy and Archibald, was born Nov. 21, 1821. He married Annie Lindsay, daughter of John and Mary Black Lindsay of the Island of Jura in Scotland. Annie was born at sea in 1838 during her parents' passage to America. Dougald was a deacon at Longstreet and taught school, probably in Longstreet Academy." "Dougald and Annie McFadyen were the parents of John Fleetwood, Daniel Graham, Katherine Ann, Neill Lindsay, James Vance, Elizabeth Jane, Effie Turner, Dougald Alexander and Archibald Buie." "John Fleetwood McFadyen, the son of Annie and Dougald McFadyen, was born Sept. 6,1860, the oldest of 11 children." "John Fleetwood married Ursula Howard, whose genealogy has connections with James Fennemore Cooper and Sir Anthony Ashley Cooper, earl of Shaftsbury, one of the eight lords proprietors." "John Fleetwood and Ursula were the parents of 10 children. The oldest was James Scott McFadyen, born in 1890." "He married Hattie Currie of Raeford, and they were the parents of J. Scott McFadyen, Jr. and Zula McFadyen Barton (Mrs. Reginald)." "A great great great grandson of Archibald McFadyen, Reginald M. Barton Jr., an attorney, takes an active part in many historic and civic projects today." Hope that this helps you, Margie Davis Austin
