    1. Revolutionary War in NC
    2. Would anyone know of a place where I could check the movements of British troops in 1782 and 1783? I recently came across a story regarding my ancestor and them, and thought it might give me a clue as to where he grew up if I could find where the Brits were around that time. Thanks, Stephen Pegler Archibald Johnston. the maternal grandfather of the subject, was also a native of North Carolina. During the Revolutionary war, when the soldiers were in his community, he was in danger of being shot, for though but ten years of age [according to the family Bible he was born in 1773], he was almost as large as a grown man. However, he donned his sister's dress and worked in the fields without being molested. During the three days that his life hung in the balance he learned to pray and thereby became a devout Christian the balance of his life, and he did all he could to unite the churches and was a great churchman. When a young man he left his native state and moved to Tennessee where he entered land from the government on which he lived several years then sold out for six dollars, per acre, having paid one dollar and twenty-five cents per acre for the same.

    1. Bellingrath and Allied Families
    2. Doug Purcell
    3. I would appreciate assistance in locating a copy of "Bellingrath and Allied Families: A Genealogical Study with Biographical Notes" which was compiled and privately printed for Mrs. T. L. Bellingrath by the American Historical Company, Inc., New York, 1949. This genealogical study focuses on the SMITH, GRAHAM, McNEILL, McKAY, BELLINGRATH and WILSON families of North Carolina and Alabama. Also can anyone tell me about the American Historical Company of New York? Was this a genealogy for hire research firm? If so does anyone know the quality of their work? When were they in business? Does anyone have a list of other publications that this company produced during its life? Thanks for any assistance offered. Mary, I am utterly amazed that our ancestors were ever able to form a government and become a nation. Just think of the many languages and dialects they spoke! Yet many of these highly intelligent, hardworking people could not even sign their name. I am just as utterly amazed that you and I can communicate to each other so quickly and easily using this new 'E-Mail'. We all have different equipment and different telephone companies. Some may be using ISDN, cable, or even the new WebTV. Early in the 'colonial days' of computers <g> [like c1980] somebody began to use certain keystrokes to change certain digital signals from the computer into telephone language. I think Hayes was the company that did this. It became a standard. For a long time the term "Hayes Compatible" was used to describe a modem that could operate using these "AT" commands. My guess about the +AD4 is that someone's modem is allowing us to see the commands as well as the text. Why do I know this? Our electrical engineer son gave my husband and me a modem to install into our computer. I remember to get it to answer the phone, I had to type in a long string of letters and numbers. Now 'Plug n Play' technology does all that for you. Now when I get a message, I just quickly skim down until I see English to read, but I am glad you didn't! Curiosity is the only way to learn. Come to think of it - I guess that is why we are all into this root digging business. CURIOSITY! That's a good word! Lura
