I am searching for the parents of an Alexander McKenzie b. 1785 in Robeson/Bladen co NC. He married a Charlotte (Monroe) b. 1785 ?NC. I know he was in Fayetteville NC in May 1809. I have his "pocketbook" in which he wrote "Alexander McKenzie, his pocketbook. Bought at John Thompson's storehouse. May 1809" He and Charlotte and one child (John Buie McKenzie) crossed the Creek Nation in 1810 with a William Monroe and his sister. They settled in Perry Co. MS. I have no idea who his father and mother were nor who Charlotte's parents were. If anyone has any information please contact me at ECarter786@aol.com. Many thanks.
Hi from Mexico. I'm on this list and have been trying very hard to find my SCOTS roots in NC through the REGISTERS. Now I have research from the New Hanover Library and have added more relationships. Please contact me at coleman@laneta.apc.org if you have information about WILLIAM HENRY, born in Scotland, married Jenett Wiley of Long Island, NY. They had 14 children, 5 sons and 8 daughters. Lived in New Hanover County. Cornelius married Charity REGISTER John married Flora Henry Andrew married Pennie Simmons William married Oliph Register a cousin of LUKE REGISTER Jennie married William Henry Mary married LUKE REGISTER Peggie married Duncan McAlister Hannah married Robert Bowie Betsy married a McMillan Annie married William Brown Isabelle married John Brown Information comes from a letter from Aaron Register to a relative, dated Jan. 9, 1911, Green Cove Springs, FL. He is the brother to my g-g-grandfather, JOHN JAMES REGISTER, born 1821 New Hanover County, NC and died in 1906 in Lee County, NC. The 1850 fed. census of New Hanover shows both REGISTERS and HENRYS as neighbors. Lots of intermarriage it would appear. Thanks and hope to hear from some of you, Patty in Mexico Patty in Mexico
Does anyone out there have information on the McCraney or McCranie families. They were early Scots who settled in Robeson County. Later some were in Cumberland and maybe even in Harnett and Moore. I would really appreciate any help. Hazel Lindsey in Florida e-mail gfjer737@aol.com
Hi from Mexico. Enjoy getting the mail list and found out yesterday that my g-g-g-grandfather is LUKE REGISTER of New Hanover County, born before 1800. Please contact me if you have any information on him. I'm trying to get the SCOTS connection straightened out. Thanks, Patty Patty
Hello, For some reason, I believe not only her husband but another member of her family was also captured and returned to Scotland. Thanks John Lester
If I'm not mistaken, Alexander McDonald was the husband of the famous Flora McDonald, who helped Bonnie Prince Charlie escape to Skye after the debacle at Culloden. Alexander and Flora organized the Tory faction in North Carolina. They lived near Cameron Hill, which is now in west Harnett County. Alexander -- probably the major in your list -- was captured. He somehow returned to Scotland, where his wife joined him after the war. I have nothing on the NC Militia, but I do have some info on the other side (my Carmichael ancestor was one who figured two wars in one century taught that you don't want to find yourself on the losing side of a war with the British Crown if you were a Scot - wrong again. They just couldn't get that military service thing right <g>). The following are all the McDonalds in the North Carolina Highland Regiment. Thought you might be interested. Keep in mind the list was compiled from various documents at different time frames (1780-1783), and so private John McDonald of Anson Co. or from Cumberland Co. could also be Lieutenant John McDonald - or not. Captain Alexander McDonald - Cumberland Co, Half-pay British officer Captain Angus McDonald - Half-pay British officer. Served as a lieutenant of pioneers prior to his appointment to NCHR Lieutenant Donald McDonald - Anson Co. Lieutenant John McDonald Ensign Angus McDonald Ensign Roderick McDonald Sergeant Angus McDonald - Cumberland Co (also listed as Private in earlier document) Private Archibald MacDonald - Bladen Co, deserted Private Archibald MacDonald - Cumberland Co, deserted Private Alexander McDonald Private Donald McDonald Private John McDonald - Anson Co. Private John McDonald - Cumberland Co Private John McDonald - Bladen Co. Hugh McDonald Jun. - Anson Co, rank unknown Also, at battle of Moore's Creek Bridge Major Alexander McDonald - captured in the battle. No further record of participation in the War. Captain Alexander McDonald - raised & commanded a company; later nominated by Cornwallis as Captain in the 1780 NCHR Lieutenant Donald McDonald - a captain at Moore's Creek Bridge. Escaped from the battlefield, and drew half pay in New York until made a lieutenant in NCHR Lieutenant(?) John McDonald - Quartermaster for the entire Loyalist force at Moore's Creek, wounded five times, one rendering useless his left arm. Served in NCHR-rank & dates unknown. I think he was a member of the Kings Mountain Militia. As a result he was awarded 640 acres in Davidson County, Tennessee and went there in 1791. I can document him very well from that point on but can't find anything about his origins or life in Carolina. Interestingly enough, after claiming his land, he took the name of MacDaniel for several years before reverting to MacDonald. I will be happy to share what I have with any interested parties. Here is a site which may be of interest to some. It shows the distribution of the top 50,000 surnames in the US as reflected by several Census projects. (1850 to present) Given my hit and miss track record with successfully inserting links into email, I've tried to cover all bases here. Hope it works! Where on this Yahoo site does it ask you for money? I've never been asked for money!!! Linda
Mary I have used the CAPE-FEAR_SCOTS-L for 6 or 8 months and have not paid one cent.
I saw this message about a FREE to join message board, pulled it up and saw its mention that it was a FREE site, then the next screen asked me for what credit card I wanted to put this on. What kind of FREE site needs credit card information? Has (other than Peter from Australia) anyone checked out "http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/scottishfamilyresearch" and, if so, did you find it useful & legitimate or a rip-off? Mary Lander
Hey Mary, The reason that I asked is that Cape Fear Scots listing is free and has always been. I would say that someone is attempting to get your credit card number through a sham. Don't give it to them. Thanks John
hello mary what listing are you talking about? thanks john
Hi, I hope that all of the people that I had their names in the book. Got their answers. And for all of those whose names were not in the book. I am very sorry. The response was over welming. But,it was a great pleasure to be able to find some of your families. I hope that you all get all of the answers that you are searching for. And that includes me. For the ones that would like me to now scan your pages for you out of the book. I would be glad to do so tomorrow. Just make sure to send me your surnames. I can't remember all of the ones that I said that I would do that for. I would do it today, but,I am totally exausted.I did a little antique shopping today in between. Happy Hunting, Patty

Seeking information on the AMERICAN HISTORICAL COMPANY, INC. of New York. In 1949 they published a book or booklet entitled "Bellingrath and Allied Families:A Genealogical Study with Biographical Notes" which was compiled by Mrs.Theodore Leon (Maude Smith) Bellingrath (1890-1954) of Little Rock, AK. The book had chapters on various North Carolina families including: McKay, McNeill, Smith, and Graham. The Bellingrath family was originally from Germany and moved to this country in the 1840's. They were in Cumberland Co., North Carolina in the 1850's, where members married into Scot families, and then moved through Georgia before coming to Alabama and other states. I am interested in learning if the AMERICAN HISTORICAL COMPANY is still in business. Was it or is it a reputable genealogical research firm? Are copies of the publications that they produced still available? Is there a listing of this company's genealogical and historical publications? Is anyone familiar with this company? I have found a few references to the AMERICAN HISTORICAL COMPANY on the Internet as late as the mid 1960's. And finally I am looking for a copy of the 1949 publication on "Bellingrath and Allied Families". Thanks in advance for any information that anyone may have on this company.
