Hello listers, I am new to this list and hoping to find my McNeil origins in the new world. Any chance someone might be researching the McNeil name from Buteshire, Scotland; particularly this family? John McNeil m. Isobel McGilchrist in 1791 in Rothesay, son Robert b. 1791. I suspect Robert's parents came over to North America as well as I cannot find any record of them in Bute after Robert's birth. Robert appears in Nova Scotia in 1821 jointly purchasing land with a fellow named James McTyre. Robert's parents seem to have left Bute but can't find them in NS. Is it possible that John and Isobel settled elsewhere and son Robert left them in the US for Nova Scotia? Thanks all, Richard MacNeil Coordinator, Pictou County, Nova Scotia GenWeb "http://www.rootsweb.com/~nspictou/"

To John Lester -- I noticed Bethunes were among the surnames you're researching. I have heard that the Smiths who settled near Cameron Hill in west Harnett Co., N.C., were related to the Bethunes in Scotland. My grandmother, Elinor Christian Smith (1869-1955), married James A. Caligan of Moore Co. Elinor's father was William John Smith; her mother, Christian Elizabeth Cameron. William John's father was William Smith, his grandfather John Smith, and his g-grandfather Robin Smith. Robin Smith immigrated from South Uist to N.C., where he met and married a Kate or Joan Crawford near Lobelia in present-day Hoke Co., N.C. Anything to expand on, confirm, or refute family tradition would be appreciated. Bill Caligan

I know the 1890 burned, but I need 1880 and 1900. How do you get these later copies. I have had an easier time getting the EARLIER censuses through Bladen Historical Society, Any ideas? There are a lot of Web Sites on the Internet that offer information on Scottish roots. Many have been posted here. Scottish Clans often have their own WebSites. There are also Web Sites that show where different families were concentrated. There is a huge web Site on just European sites where you can click on to U.K. first (for United Kingdom) then Scotland and then zero in on the family name or clan. One can try the World GenForum to get to the U.K.. I have only been using a computer for six months, and I am having so much fun exploring. Also, try getting in touch with your Clan here in the U.S. They usually have a genealogist who might be able to help you or recommend some books for reference. Thought you might like to know we have a "companion" web site now. It is - www.capefearscots.com To start with the site primarily contains information about the Flora Macdonald Highland Games (since that organization is paying the bill), and the Flora Macdonald campus in Red Springs. Changes to the site are anticipated on a regular basis, so if you have anything you would like put on the web site, such as upcoming events of interest to the "Cape Fear Scots", please let me know. Please look at the website, and let me have your comments. Any suggestions for improvements will be appreciated. You might also be interested to know, that as of last week, there were over 200 "subscribers" to the CAPE-FEAR-SCOTS mail list.

Hi John. I notice you are researching the Bethunes, among others. Do you have anything on John Bethune the surgeon who came over in 1774? The other John, the minister, is more prominent in the records, it seems, but I haven't found much on my John. He was the father of Sally Bethune married to Neal McLeod, my progenitor. Betsy, I agree! I knew the ancestral files were contributed by church members, but I had read that the IGI files were supposed to have been taken from actual documents, and would be accurate. That is not totally true. On another list a researcher wrote that on the microfiche source number, if the third digit was 5 or higher, the record was taken from actual documents. If it is 4 or less that record was contributed by a church member. I don't know how accurate that statement is, and I have no further information available to me to prove or disprove it. I simply share it as I read it. I have been trying to test it on information that I know for sure, and so far it seems correct. Three IGI Files had one person with the same parents and same birth date being born in 3 different places - in two different states! The one that I think is accurate was the only one of the 3 to pass the test. Maybe someone with knowledge of the church records could help us out here -?
