    1. Dying Without A Will in 1837?
    2. Marion Paterson
    3. Can anyone advise what happened to a wife and children when the husband died without a will in NC about 1837? In many states, when the deceased was intestate, the estate was equally divided among the surviving spouse and children. Sometimes this only included the 'infant' children of the marriage, which meant whatever the definition of 'infant' was in that state. Sometimes under 18, sometimes under 21. I have a copy of a petition of Elizabeth (nee Nichols) ROYCROFT in 1839 petitioning for a year's 'widow' support, and mentioning some 'infant children' who do not include son Jerome B ROYCROFT, who would have been about 19 at the time of his father's death, and about 21 at the time of the petition. What was the law when a husband died intestate, leaving wife and both younger and older children? Have the laws changed in NC since that time? -- Regards, Marion Paterson, San Diego <maripat2@san.rr.com> Rootsweb Donor ******************************************************* Researching ROYCROFT, BRITTAIN & BOOTH - NC & AL 1700+ *******************************************************

    3. This past weekend, I met someone who spoke of something that was new to me, about "truce land". This is in reference to the land in Northeast South Carolina that was made available to some Scots in North Carolina after the revolution. Does anyone have additional information about the truce land? Jim Simpson Atlanta

A lot of important mail is deleted without being looked at. If the subject line does not identify it as something I want, I see no point in opening it. 1. John McAlester-Argyll Colony-1739 arrival
    2. I keep looking and looking and looking for reference to John McAlester, listed in several places as a verified member of the Argyll Colony, arriving on "The Thistle of Saltcoats" with Hector and Alexander McAlester. No hint, so far, as to his relationship to them. His wife was Anne, and I assume, came with him, along with children Flora McAlester (later married Stephen Phillips), Angus McAlester, Catherine McAlester (married 1-Neil McNeil and 2-Alexander Gregory), Margaret McAlester (married a Mr. Shaw), and Jane/Jenett McAlester (married a Magnus Cowan). At least some of the children, if not all, must have been born in Scotland and come over with their parents. Does anyone have information on these folks??? Or clues on where to look? I'd be very grateful! Sue Folawn/San Mateo, CA (5 greats grand-daughter)

    3. Hello Joanne, Thank you so much for the nice welcome. I know I am going to enjoy this list. And many thanks for taking the time to look up and find William Booth. It could well be one of our Booths, and I'm keeping him in my 'maybe' file. I wondered about Anson Co, NC. Since I have a William ANSON ROYCROFT, b 1868, my husbands' grandfather, I was wondering if anyone knew the origin of the name, and whether anyone has run into it as a common given name. William Anson Roycroft's father was Jerome Bonaparte Roycroft, and he had a brother named ANSON Columbus ROYCROFT. I have yet to find any ANSON surname in the family, but you never know. Are there any naming patterns that were prevalent in 1800's NC, such as first son named after father's father? 2. Lawrence Geddie
    3. GeddieWorld has received notice that BJ of Williamsburg is doing research on the family of James Geddy Jr, the Silversmith of Williamsburg , in the 18th century, His brother John Geddy, moved to Halifax North Carolina. He married Patience McKenna(also spelled McKinnie). He was an active Patriot, serving in the First Provincial Congress in Newbern NC , in 1774. I know of at least 2 daughters, Martha (Geddy) Marshall, and Sara Geddy. "I do not know his death date, but believe it is 1799 or 1800. I would like to determine if he also became a silversmith like his brother James, also would like to know if anyone knows where he is buried." James Geddy Jr's home still stands in Colonial Williamsburg. It dates to 1762. He was married to Elizabeth Waddill Geddy. they had 5 children : Nancy, Mary, Elizabeth, James III, and William Waddill (possibly named after wife's brother, William Waddill, who was excellent engraver etc.} "I came across this website [GeddieWorld] and am thankful for it. Thanx for your help. BJ from Williamsburg VA" We would of course also like to know if this Geddy is related to the New Hanover-Cumberland Geddie's arriving late 18th-century. Many thanks for hints!
