    1. Bogus Stories
    2. Hi It could that when those stories started, it would have been much more socially acceptable to say that they descended from wealthy landowners who moved from Scotland to the Carolinas, or even from shipwrecked sailors, rather than saying that they were descended from Jacobite prisoners who arrived in chains. Perhaps some of those prisoners occasionally escaped whomever they were indentured to and needed a story? Jan

    3. When I wrote the list the other day to ask about researching a shipwreck story of my scottish grandparents coming to the USA in 1700s many kind people responded. BUT, quite a few warned me that there were many ficticious shipwreck stories made up by the "scottish" immigrants. AND, there were quite a few ficticious stories made up about a fake/missing scottish brother. This made me very interested to know...why did they make these two things up? ONE member of the list joked about wondering what the germans and french etc made up as a constant joke. So, I ask all the experts...what is the story. In my own family lines (osborne) a phoney genealogist around 1930-1950 made up a family tree for us that was totally fake and we are still finding these "facts" in people's trees today!! In my Baker line there was a hoax created early in the century that our line was to inherit big time and everyone went nuts trying to get the money. just curious. carole in nyc --- CAPE-FEAR-SCOTS-D-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > > You have me intrigued. 3. I have found the same with rumours of Indian blood. All my relatives have regurgitated a legend that we are "part Cherokee" or "part Creek," But I have not found any evidence yet. I think it was just a popular, hip thing to be at one time and everyone keeps repeating it. Which surprises me, because Indians weren't treated much, or any, better than blacks in those days - so who the hell would want to marry, much less brag, about what people would consider "bad blood" back then? >From: "Jim Simpson" <jimsimpson@acf.dhhs.gov> >Reply-To: <jimsimpson@acf.dhhs.gov> >To: CAPE-FEAR-SCOTS-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: re: Bogus Scottish Brothers >Date: Tue, 14 Sep 1999 9:33:02 -0400 > >My take on bogus shipwreck stories is that they were started in a given >family to disguise another fact. 3. Zou Feagin, Daniel Cameron may have been my gggggg-grandfather. If so, he would have been the father of "Hill" Allen Cameron, who married Isabella Campbell before immigrating to North Carolina. Both from Arglyshire, Scotland, Allen was born in 1759 and Isabella in 1767. Both are buried, with tombstones imported from Scotland, in the Cameron Hill Presbyterian church cemetery. Isabella's sister, Mary Campbell, is buried beside them. Allen was called "Hill" Allen because he lived on a hill and to distinguish him from "Mill" Allen Cameron, who operated a mill about the same time. I have heard that "Hill" Alllen's father was "Hill" Daniel Cameron. Contact me at wjcaligan@hotmail.com if you would like to explore this further. Bill Caligan

    3. Would like some help with Duncan Mc Craven. He shows up in Union County, SC in 1780's. The first record we find for him spells his name McCreeven. Our family member living in England tried to locate the name in Scotland and was told that the name must have been changed (Americanized?). One branch spells it Mc Raven, now. Ruth Burns

Be sure and scroll down to the very bottom so as not to miss anything. It even has the soldiers listed by State, Company, Name, Rank and status. Or did she remarry (I wouldn't question this, except that it's barely a year after his death)? One of my family histories ( http://www.synthcom.com/~jdm/genealogy/mcneill.htm ) reads: "Major Jack's first wife died, and he married ____ Buchnan and had the following children by her: John B., Frank, Sallie, and Flora." Major Jack is the same as Maj. John, and Elizabeth Buchanan is obviously the same as the unknown Buchnan. Could Elizabeth have had 4 children before age 22? Yes, but how likely? Unfortunately I don't have any birth year data on these kids. I know Major Jack had a 1st wife, a McCoy. I'd love to hear from anyone researching these McNeills. Jeffrey
