----- Original Message ----- From: Mike Cummons To: NCSCOTS-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, October 11, 1999 6:50 PM Subject: Jacobite Rebels 1716, part 1 Taken from the "National Genealogical Society" Quarterly, March 1976, Vol 64, number 1. By Clifford Neal Smith (594 W. Lincoln Hwy, DeKalb, IL 60115): TRANSPORTED JACOBITE REBELS, 1716 Among the persons transported to the American colonies in 1716 were 637 Scottish rebels captured at Preston, Lancashire, on 14 Nov 1715. The rebels were supporters of the exiled James II of England and his heirs. There were many such adherents among the Roman Catholics of Scotland, and some in Ireland, and among the Nonjurors, a dissident group within the Church of England. During the rebellion of 1715 the rebel forces entered Preston on 9 Nov and, after proclaiming as their king the chevalier of St. George, remained there for several days, during which the government forces advanced upon them. The town was assaulted, and on 14 Nov the rebel general Thomas FORSTER surrendered his army to the King's forces. Persons shown below, as compiled from ten ship manifests, were taken prisoner and sent to the American Colonies the following spring as indentured servants for a seven-year period. Those who refused to be voluntarily indentured were forced into that condition upon arrival in the colonies. According to a receipt given to the commissary general of the rebel prisoners, 639 prisoners were transported, but, for reasons unknown to this writer, only 636 were named in the manifest. An additional prisoner (John DALZYEL) has been identified from other documents. In the interest of space conservation, ship names and destinations have been coded. It should be noted that not all prisoners reached the destinations originally designated. ship destination ship code code A Va "Anne", Capt Robert WALLACE, bound for VA from Liverpool 31 July 1716 with 18 prisoners. Af Bar "Africa". Richard CROPPER, master bound for Barbadoes from Liverpool 15 July 1716 with 1 prisoner. EA Va/Jam "Elizabeth and Anne". commander Edward TRAFFORD, bound for VA and Jamaica from Liverpool 28 July 1716 with 126 prisoners (128 prisoners listed in manifest). F Va/Md "Friendship". Capt Michael MANKIN, bound for MD or VA from Liverpool 24 May 1716 with 80 prisoners. G Va "Godspeed (or Goodspeed). Capt Arthur SMITH, bound for VA (but leaving prisoners in MD) from Liverpool 28 July 1716 with 54 prisoners on one manifest and 2 additional on another manifest. H StC "Hockenhill" Capt Hockenhill SHORT, bound for St. Christophers, Leeward Islands, date not given, with 30 prisoners. S SC "Susannah" Capt Thomas BROMHALL, bound for SC from Liverpool 7 May 1716 with 101 prisoners listed on the manifest, although receipted for 104. Sc (?) Please help! Our family reunion hopes to include a Kirkin' of the Tartans at the church service prior to our reunion, Sunday, Oct. 17. We are in desperate need of a piper! Unfortunately, this is the same weekend as the Stone Mountain Games, so the St. Andrews Pipe Band is unavailable and seem to be taking most of the known local pipers with them. Ideally, we would like someone who can play a few tunes outside the church before the service (starting about 10:45), pipe the tartan in and out of the church and then maybe play a few tunes during the family reunion. Talent (or lack thereof) is not an issue. If you can make it through Amazing Grace, you'll do! We're just a poor bunch of Scots, so we can't offer a big stipend, but we can offer you and your family an old fashion Sunday dinner-on-the-grounds, the likes of which you've not seen in years! The reunion is held Oct. 17 at the Bensalem Presbyterian Church in western Moore County. It's about 30 minutes west of Southern Pines and about 10 minutes east of US Hwy. 220. Anyone who can help, or who can refer a piper to us, will be greatly appreciated. Rick Monroe, president Monroe Family Reunion rickmonroe@USiway.net
(This McNeill thread seems to be traveling on two mail servers, so I apologize for the double posting.) In reply to Cynthia Dean and J.D. McEachin; I've been following all these McNeill messages with interest as a Hector McNeill was my 4th great-grandfather. According to my information his wife was Isobel Murchison. Their daughter was Isobel McNeill, b 1790, d 1874 and married to Isham Seawell. Isobel and Isham Seawell lived in western Moore Co., in the vicinity of Eagle Springs and Samarcand. I don't know where Hector and Isobel McNeill lived. J.D's message noted that a Hector McNeill had a place on Drowning Creek. That sounds right as my Monroe ancestors were on Drowning Creek by 1763 at "Monroe's Bridge," now between Jackson Springs and Windblow in Montgomery Co. From there, the next generations of Monroes settled slightly north toward Eagle Springs and Bensalem Church. The McNeills and Seawells seem to have followed a similar pattern. All this information is taken from "The Family of Isham and Isobel McNeill Seawell, Moore County, NC" by Leland Seawell McDonald. The book contains no documentation and I've not tried to confirm the information myself. I've looked into the McNeil line only enough to learn that Hector McNeill was a very popular name! I have wondered if my Hector was the one in the original Argyll Colony or related to him. Any info you -- or anyone else -- has connecting this line will be appreciated! Any other Moores (or the variant spellings of Muir, More, Moar, Moir, Mure) out there that might be interested in the Clan History? If so, I have made a website dealing with the history of Clan (Moore, Muir, More, Moar, Moir, Mure). If I have made any historical errors, Please let me know and if possible provide some of the direct documentation. The site address is http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Meadows/8535/ Clan Moore (Kurt, Annette, Brent, Ashlynn, Brandy, Toby & George)
Hi Sarah, The last issue I received of Argyll Colony Plus is dated 1993. It's published in April, August and December by The North Carolina Scottish Heritage Society. The dues back then were $25.00 a year. The publications are beautifully done, easy to read and full of information. I'm sure many of the officers have changed by now. If you do not receive info. from someone else on the list, please email me and I will try to get you a contact. Betty barkleyb@earthlink.com
One of my relatives, Duncan McLaurin, owned a mercantile business in Fayetteville, NC with a man named Clark. The Mercantile store was name Clark and McLaurin and appeared in the 1790 Census for Cumberland County, North Carolina. I am searching for info regarding the business. Does anyone had any info they would be willing to share
Can someone tell me about the publication "Argyll Colony Plus"? I would love to get copies.
