1. Other Sites
2. Hello again Mary, Here are some clickable sites which will help you in your quest for information on your search in North Carolina. These are the county sites which had the largest influx of Scottish immigrants during the 1700s and 1800s. There are so many, I did not feel that I should include them in my reply on the ScotsWeb query. I appologize for including so many, but these are the ones you will need in your search and you probably will not find many more. I also have McMillan in my family along with McGugan, McGougan, McFadyen, McNeil, McGurmin, Blue, Bethune, Campbell, Whyte and others from such fine places as North Knapdale, Argyllshire and Roseneath, Dunbartonshire. I wish you luck and should you need any additional help, please let me know. Everyone on this listing is very proud of their Scottish Heritage and will most likely also help in anyway that they can. NCGenWeb Genealogy Brunswick County NC Home Page Columbus County NC Home Page New Hanover County Genealogical Page Pender County North Carolina Genealogy Robeson County NCGenWeb Page Bladen County NCGenWeb Cumberland County North Carolina Sampson County News Harnett County NCGenWeb Page Hoke County North Carolina Genealogy Scotland County, North Carolina Home Page (An... mcgen Richmond County, North Carolina Home Page (An... Consolidated NC Links Carolina Scots - Home Cumberland County 1820 Census 1790 Census - Fayetteville, Cumberland Co. Since you seem to be the most active, I'm sending this to you. I descend from Gilbert McKeithan who first appeared in a New Hanover record in 1753, then married in Winyah, SC in 1763, then reappeared in Bladen Co and moved to Brunswick Co where he died. He seems to be of some kin to Donald McKeithan 1739 emigrant from Scotland (I have a record that proves this but need to have it reduced before I can scan it and put it online.) Anyway, I have a great deal of info on the early McKeithans including Dougald McKeithan of SC and his son Thomas McKeithan (his wife Deborah had remarried James McRee by 1750) as well as the descendants of Donald McKeithan 1739 emigrant who probably was Dougald's brother. There are numerous records that indicate a connection of some kind between these two sets of McKeithans. However Dougald was in SC as early as 1732. I think Gilbert was probably a son of Thomas McKeithan but can't prove it at this point. Perhaps the McRee records would be of help. Know any McRee researchers? I am uploading scans of important documents (originals) to my page at http://www.geocities.com/heartland/plains/8008/ The 1750 will of Dugald McKeithan is there - proves his father Donald as well as brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews. To go directly to this page, just add records.htm to the end of the above url. But there is other McKeithan info elsewhere on the site. I have quite a bit of Cumberland Co research if it will help anyone. Not all families - only the ones that related to the families that I had an interest in. I just don't have space or time to put it on my page. If you think this would be of help to others, feel free to pass it on to the list since I can't. 2. --part1_b168ef9e.243b8f71_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hello, Here is something of additional interest on Scottish naming patterns John --part1_b168ef9e.243b8f71_boundary Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Disposition: inline Return-path: JDSMITHKSK@aol.com From: JDSMITHKSK@aol.com Full-name: JDSMITHKSK Message-ID: <b168ef9e.243aed9d@aol.com> Date: Tue, 6 Apr 1999 00:54:53 EDT Subject: Re: Scottish Naming Patterns To: Sacklester@aol.com MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: AOL 4.0 for Windows 95 sub 13 Reply-To: JDSMITHKSK@aol.com The general custom, to which there were some variations, was to name children as follows: The eldest son after the paternal grandfather The second son after the maternal grandfather The third son after the father The eldest daughter after the maternal grandmother The second daughter after the paternal grandmother The third daughter after the mother Younger children would be named after earlier forbears, but the pattern in their case was less settled. One variation from the above was for the eldest son to be named after the mother's father and the eldest daughter after the father's mother. In this case the second son would be named after the father's father and the second daughter after the mother's mother. Occasionally the second son and daughter would be named after the father and mother instead of the third son and daughter. Another variation was to call the third daughter after one of the great-grandmothers instead of after the mother. In such a case the fourth daughter would usually be called after the mother. Variations were sometimes noticeable in particular localities. The existence of earlier children who died young will affect the pattern. Both parents having the same name would affect the pattern, also. A maternal grandfather, if he was a man of importance, might be given priority over the paternal grandfather. Sometimes a son might be named after a godfather or father's patron. Sometimes a child was named after a minister recently ordained to the parish, when the child's baptism was his first in the parish. Sometimes a child would be given a Christian or feminine equivalent of a doctor when it was the first birth at which he attended. Before the middle of the 18th century it was very rare to find more than one Christian name. In 1760, in Edinburgh, only about 1 percent had 2 Christian names In 1790, 7 percent had 2 Christian names In 1820, 25 percent had 2 Christian names The second Christian name was sometimes the name of a godfather or godmother. The custom also included a surname from the mother's side. Taken from book "In Search of Scottish Ancestry" Jeanne jdsmithksk California --part1_b168ef9e.243b8f71_boundary--

3. Scott Buie--Do you have further info about family of HUGH BROWN and MARY BUIE who may have been my fifth great grandparents, parents of MARY BROWN MCMILLAN, wife of JAMES MCMILLAN SR? ABOUT 1846-47 two of my great great grandfathers--DOUGALD ALEXANDER MCMILLAN (b. 1823) and his wife ANN ³NANCY² BAIN, and Dougald¹s first cousin, DAVID DOUGALD MCMILLAN and his wife MARY MARGARETE BAIN--moved to Gadsden County, FL, from Cumberland Co., NC. Another who made the move was Dougald¹s brother, JAMES W. MCMILLAN. Dougald and James W. were sons of JAMES MCMILLAN JR., and his wife, CATHERINE MUNN. (This is from info handed down in the Dougald McMillan line.) However, I am not absolutely certain which of James Jr.¹s sons was the father of David, but think it was Daniel since he was married to Mary Munn (family lore: Dougald and David were ³double² first cousins). A number of North Carolina Buies were pioneers of Gadsden Co., FL, arriving in the early 1820s, including Archibald Buie, Sr. It is possible that James Sr.¹s father was named DOUGALD MCMILLAN, an adult male living in Cumberland County as early as 1753. This Dougald McMillan received a 300-acre land grant in 1753, later sold it to HUGH BROWN, received another grant of 150 acres on Locks Creek in 1756. Effects of Dougald's estate were sold in 1761. His wife may have remarried a NEIL McNEIL (or McNUIER). I have no info on the Brown family and little on the Bains and Munns, but would love to hear from anyone who has. ----------

2. Hello, I have sent this before but for those who have not seen it, here it is again. If you have a color printer which will print 11 X 17 copies, it is even better. I have listed the clickable site in Blue lettering, but for those who do not have this feature, I have listed the site address for you. Click here: (No Document) ftp://ftp.csn.net/McCallum/maps/map.jpg I hope you enjoy it. It is simply titled "McCranie". It is about the early McCranies that settled in North Carolina from Scotland. My grandmother was a McCranie and I am working on the family genealogy. This book would be a great help. Thanks for any help. e-mail gfjer737@aol.com
