I was wondering if you'd still be willing to share some information about the Niles family? I'm trying to fill in the blanks I have. I might have mentioned that I did find Olive's obituary (daughter of Thomas and Margaret Niles) that gave quite a lot of information, as well as letters that she'd written to her Cane relatives that were published in the Newmarket Era when she was overseas during the war serving as a nurse. I'd love to hear from you. Thank you! Mary Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: rorycain1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.cane/59.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Georgina, I have had a few Kiwi Cain/Cane, etc correspondents contact me over the years that I have been honorary admin at the Cain DNA project. In the case of your ancestor from Shoreditch, a place full of immigrants, one action would be to check that his family didn't migrate there from somewhere else. My family in Aus claimed to be Londoners but clearly they migrated twice as their DNA places them in the west of Ireland. There were Cane/Cain folks in some counties near to London. Without a documented paper trail the only other way is a DNA test like the bargain basement Y12 that Family Tree DNA offer. Plus a Cane (etc) database with which to compare your dad'd results. I thin the Cain DNA project at www.familytreedna.com/public/Cain-Caine is the biggest Cane (etc) DNA database. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: MaryRains51 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.cane/32.2.1.1.1.3.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, So if you click on "Replay", just above the "post" button is a green link that says "attach file." If you click on that, you'll get a "Browse" button that allows you to locate the file on your computer. Just double click on that file name/or click on "open" and it will attach the file. Info: I did not have the death info on Lucy, but have a range of dates for Thomas Nathaniel Sr....bet. 1855 and 1860. Thirza Belfrey, Henry's first wife, died in March 1860. Olive was married to Elias Widdifield. William Cane Niles married Amelia Belfry, daughter of Christopher and Charlotte Belfry. Married Oct. 8, 1878. He was from California and that is where they returned. His nephew, and namesake, eventually ended up in California as well. I have a maiden name of "Martin" for Nancy, Lucy's mother. Lucy's brother, William Cane owned a pencil factory in Newmarket and was mayor of Newmarket for a period of time. William married Catherine Belfry, sister to Thirza and Christopher. Lucy's son, Thomas Nathaniel Jr. died in 1890 just a little over a month before his wife, Margaret Rutledge. Their daughter, Olive, went to live with Henry Stiles Cane, a nephew of Thirza and Henry Dodd Stiles. I don't have anything further back on Thomas Sr. although I believe the family also came! up from the US, possibly from around the Albany area. I did find a biographical sketch of Henry Dodd Stiles that said he came originally from Kentucky and was a merchant, magistrate and leader in the ranks of the Reform party and took part in the War of 1812. There are only 2 pages and I am not sure how accurate the notes are but I will send them to you. I don't have a huge amount on Lucy's family but there is a bit. I have gone back as far as Samuel and Agnes (Nancy) Cane, Lucy's parents.I am descended from Edward Cane and Ann Thompson. Send me your e mail and I will send the notes and anything else I have that you want. I live in Winnipeg. Where are you? This goes back to Lucy Cane Niles Stiles. I was very excited to see your reference to her papers of 1899. I have to believe this is the same person I've been trying to find information about with all the same names! She was married to Nathaniel Niles and then to Henry D. Stiles. Her brother, William Cane was very influential in the area, owning a factory and becoming mayor of Newmarket. Could you let me know how I might be able to get a copy of her papers? Thanks! Your story was interesting as I too was told the Cane Branch of the family were from Bulgaria but also Ireland & during the potato Famine moved too England. Also there maybe some truth in the name being Jewish as Cane is a Biblical name& I believe Jewish? I have only begun researching my Fathers side of the family who came out to N.Z. in 1928 from Southhampton, England. I so far have gone back a generation on my grandfathers side of the Cane Family, would be interested to know more.
