    1. The Laws of Genealogy
    2. THE LAWS OF GENEALOGY The document containing evidence of the missing link in your research will invariably be lost due to fire, flood or war. The keeper of the vital records you need will just have been insulted by another genealogist. Your great, great grandfather's obituary states that he died, leaving no issue of record. The Town Clerk you wrote to in desperation, and finally persuaded to give you the information you need, can't write legibly and doesn't have a copy machine. The Will you need is in the safe on board the "Titanic." The spelling of your European ancestor's name bears no relationship to its current spelling or pronunciation. That ancient photograph of four relatives, one of whom is your progenitor, carries the names of the other three. Copies of old newspapers have holes which occur only on last names. No one in your family tree ever did anything noteworthy, always rented property, was never sued, and was never named in Wills. You learned that great Aunt Matilda's executor just sold her life's collection of family genealogical materials to a flea market dealer "somewhere in New York City." Yours is the ONLY last name not found among the three billion in the world- famous Mormon archives in Salt Lake City. Ink fades and paper deteriorates at a rate inversely proportional to the value of the data recorded. The 37-volume, sixteen-thousand-page history of your country of origin IS NOT INDEXED! The critical link in your family tree is named "SMITH."

    1. WARNING
    2. Ken Sartin
    3. I am posting this to warn others about problems with ; Census Microfilm Expeditors 476 E. South Temple , Suite 4 Salt Lake City , UT 84111 website ; www.censusmicrofilm.com e-mail ; gme@nwinfo.net and ; sj@censusmicrofilm.com I was lured to order several microfilm copies from this company with "guarantees" of "speedy delivery" and "low price" . My order was placed in October of 1998 and as of this posting I have not received the order or a refund after numerous contacts with Steven Jensen at this firm . In his occasional replies he repeatedly gave false information to me as to the status of the order and cashed the check when mentioned stopping payment on it .I have copies of all documents and correspondences for those interested . Complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau and the United States Postal Inspectors , they have informed me that even they can't order this company to give a refund , but may seek criminal charges . I guess small claims court is next . If you are seeking genealogy resources......consider my experiences with this "Firm". Thank you , Kenneth Sartin researching ; Sartin , Sartain , Sarton , Sarten , Sardin etc. etc.

    1. Please note possible bumps with messages getting through!
    2. This from Brian re Rootsweb upgrades (Rootsweb is who runs our lists for us): We're finally starting in on the move of the main server. We've finished breaking in the new box at the Anaheim NOC and in preparation yesterday we increased our bandwidth by 250% to the equivalent of just under 7 T1s. Preparations notwithstanding, there will probably be some bumps. Please be patient with us; I expect we'll have a the transition problems cleaned up within a week of when we actually cut over to the new server. -B Jackie McKey Campbell List Owner

    2. Donald Pease
    3. Hi everyone, I'm new to your list. I have a question: are there records available from the Napa State Hospital? I have the name of a family member that died there in 1912. I don't know yet where he fits in, but he is buried in one of the family owned burial lots. I also don't know if the hospital was only for mentally ill persons or if they also treated other health problems. Anyone here know where I can find some answers? Would there be an obit for someone dying at the State hospital? HELP!! Jaki in Montana
