ARE YOU A GOOD ANCESTOR? A good ancestor keeps certificates including birth and death certificates; records including health, military, naturalization, and school; passports; newspaper and church notices; awards; photos; art and craft work; journals; Bibles; diaries; baby, school and wedding books; heirlooms. He or she dates correspondence, cares for tombstones, keeps research organized, writes or tapes the family stories, and supports family organizations. A good ancestor dates everything, is sure that full names are included, records where material may be found and always sees that at least one other copy of important data is somewhere else. A hundred years from now, will they think you were a good ancestor?
Hi, I think I saw the name Grigsby posted on this list not long ago. Yesterday I had a rare couple of hours to spend on the microfilm reader, looking at old Arroyo Grande (San Luis Obispo County) Herald-Recorder newpapers. I came across the obit below, dated 4 June 1954, and thought it might be of interest to whoever was researching the Grigsby name. Hope it helps! Elaine Waiters ewaiters@thegrid.net -------------- WALTER GRIGSBY, 74 NIPOMO MESA, DIES Walter Grigsby, 74, who had lived in Nipomo for othe last 63 years, died last Saturday at his home on Nipomo Mesa after several months of ill health. GENEALOGY VIRUS WARNING! Very Contagious especially to Adults. It is thought to be spread by some unknown bug or gene that strikes almost without warning. It strikes persons of either sex and usually starts after the age 50, about the time when the nest has empties and work responsibilities are less pressing. Symptoms: The first sign of the ailment is that the person develops a new need for finding out, and writing down, all about his family, even those things that others wish would be left untold. There is generally a compulsion to search for names, dates, and places. The patient often develops a blank expression, is sometimes deaf to spouse and children. Normally loses his appetite for work of any kind except that which involves the feverish looking through records at libraries and courthouses. He often has a compulsion to write letters to unknown cousins who often could care less about his queries. He often swears at the mailman when he doesn't leave mail from someone he has learned about third hand. The patient likes to frequent such strange places as cemeteries, dilapidated ruins and remote desolate rural areas. It may be noted that he makes secret night calls and tries to hide the telephone bill from his spouse. He mumbles constantly to himself as he turns page after page in some dusty tome he has found in an out-of-the-way antique shop. He often has a faraway look in his eyes as he reads the story of some obscure ships captain or brave western pioneer. Treatment: Medication has been proven useless. The disease is not usually fatal but does get progressively worse until some other ailment overcomes the victim. The best treatment is to provide a measure of isolation so that the patient will not be disturbed for hours on end and to humor him when he gets the urge to travel back to the state from which his ancestors came, or to purchase a new, more powerful computer. He should be encouraged to secure therapy at such places as: genealogy workshops, family reunions and historical society meetings. It has been found that periodic doses of genealogy books and magazines, including an occasional new genealogy program for his computer. Prognosis: The malady often leads to eye strain, gradual loss of memory for common household chores, and a loss of the lower limbs due to lack of exercise. It is not normally a fatal disease by it has been noted that the sicker a patient gets, the more he seems to enjoy it. ~~~Thanks to Fred Hawkins - TNMAUTY-L@rootsweb.com~~~
I am letting people know that a new County List for Genealogical Discussion & research has been started in California: CAYOLO [Yolo County]. I expect that as one of the smaller counties it may not be as active as some of the others in California, but I believe in time it can be very helpful. Subcribing is by sending an e-mail message with the word "subscribe" as the only word in the body of a message with no subject to: (mail mode): "caxxxxxx-l-request@rootsweb.com" (digest mode): "caxxxxxx-d-request@rootsweb.com" Posting queries is by subscribers is to: "caxxxxxx-l@rootsweb.com" where "caxxxxxx" is the list name ["cayolo"] I would like to announce the startup of this new list so that people with an interest in genealogy in Yolo County can be made aware of it. Thanks again. Sincerily, Edward, Sr.
Ginny, I haven't been able to get to the census microfilm at the Library yet, the lines are long and the machines few. But at the Genealogy Library I found a lot on the GRISBY's, but not you Calivn... The GRIGSBY's were a pioneer Napa family, so I'm sure if you contacted them directly they could put you in contact with the families also searching that name. I did find a lot of birth and cemetery records and am including them here. So at least you know there were some GRIGSBY's in Napa in the 1880's! Ellen, I got the date of burial of Henry C. Simmons of 01/26/1919 but he's listed as Harry not Henry. The date of burial for Ann E. Simmons was 12/03/1906. They are both buried in St. Helena Cemetery as you said. I will get the obits by Friday as I'm having to make several trips to the public library to use the microfilm. We only use the microfilm machine for 30 minutes at a time unless there's nobody else waiting. Today was not one of my lucky days! Jackie : ) In Napa, CA
Joan, I got the obits of Joseph Terrell & Gladys Terrell. I need your snail mail address to send them to you. Jackie : ) In Napa, CA
Carolyn, No luck at the Genealogy Library on these obits. I will try the 1872 Napa Newspapers later this week. Fortunately the newspapers back then weren't published daily so it should be a little easier to look for. Jackie : ) In Napa, CA
