I am trying to find information on a German Social Group that was operating in Napa in the Late 1800s called "Turn Verein." It is mentioned in my gggrandfather's obit in the St. Helena Star of 14 February 1881. Any help would be appreciated. Kergan in Tucson
Could someone please do a marriage return lookup for me? I would be happy to pay for printing and postage. If you have a scanner I can accept JPG format or zipped files. (as well as other common image files) Hans (1850-1913) & Kirsten Marie Jensen (1864-1951) were married July 30, 1885 in Napa Co., CA. (Kirsten's name has been misspelled on every document for her so far. She has been written as Kursten, Christine, Christein, etc.) I just discovered marriage returns at the Washington State Archives in Olympia, WA. The ones I was able to get (at 15 cents per copy!) included both individuals' names, where they were living, where they were born, both their parents' names, who officiated at the wedding, and the names of two witnesses. I am really hoping to get this information for Hans & Kirsten. This has been a dead end in our family tree. Up till now we only know that they were born in Denmark and they have siblings in the US.
Delbert, It sounds like neither of our connections to McMillen are a dirrect line but I think I will take advantage of the timing and go ahead and ask my aunt if the names you gave are familiar to her (she would have been about 27 at the time that Elizabeth passed) one of the sisters may have married into McMILLEN by that time? I will also ask about Thomas GREER, possibly her maiden name? It seems to me there "might" be a connection since my ALBERT McMillen is "said" to have worked in St. Helena. and his Wife Amy lived there and in Conn Valley, for some time before they wed. Maybe Ill come up with something! Dee
Dee I have not been able to do any research on McMillan yet, here is what I have so far ELIZABETH J McMILLAN b 1862 d Dec 28, 1935. M W McMILLAN b 1862 d Mar 13, 1932 b St Helena Cemetery. Delbert Greer
Hi, noticed your McMILLEN on Napa list. My gg.grandmother Amy Belle Towner, Giauque, Bloch's 3rd marriage was to Albert McMILLEN "Pops" Also her sister Lily Mae Towner married Albert's brother Dutch McMILLEN I dont think either had children "from these marriages" and dont know if Dutch and Albert had any more siblings. If you think this may be your McMILLEN I have a little more info and Amy's daughter in her 90s may remember more if you like I could ask her any questions on my next visit with her. Dee : )
Here are my Napa related surnames; Royston, Pacchelli, Colvin, Giauque*, Towner, Robsin "spelling ?", My husbands surnames; Chesebro, Lambert, McAfee, Champlin, Rodgers, Young. Thanks , : ) Dee
Hello, Four lines of my dad's family lived in Napa starting in the late 1800's. John Henry STAHR/STARR emigrated there from Canada and married Ida/Idella Johnston on 29th of September, 1886. Idella was supposedly born in Napa. I am still trying to find out if she is the daughter of James Wesley Johnston of Yountville (who did have a daughter named Idella). There was a Joseph and Margertet Starr family on the 1900 Napa census that I think may have been related. A William Starr who ran a second hand store in Cotati (Sonoma Co) in the 1950-1960's was a cousin of my grandfather's. My FRASH's emmigrated from Germany about 1870 and were on the 1880 census. The Balthazar DARMS moved to Napa in 1883 from Sauk Co. WI but had emmigrated to there from Switzerland around 1850. Ursula Trueb (wife of Henry Trueb) was Balthazar's sister. They were in Napa county by 1870. Some of the related lines from marriages are: STARR - BOLTON FRASH - STIEFEL, APPINGER, WELLS, BOSSINGER DARMS - LINDER, SCHMIDT, HAAS I would love to contact anyone researching these families. Sue Clover
I am looking for info on: Edward Turner Bale; Louis Bruck; Bismarck Bruck; Soberanes for starters. Kergan Bruck in Tucson AZ
My Napa names are PINER and BUTLER. The BUTLER's arrived in Napa in the late 1890's. The PINER's at one time owned the ambulance service which, I believe, still bears that name. They were also owners of rest homes in the area. Both families have numerous family members buried at Tulocay Cem. in Napa. I would be happy to share the information I have with anyone else researching these families. Jeanne
Has anybody run across the name Henry Conn in gold mines? Thanks
Hi - I'm Norm from Sonoma County, my dad was the only one in his family to leave Napa County. I am researching HARDIN, HAUG, EBERSPACHER, MUFICH, WOODWARD, THIEBAULT and DEALY.

Can anyone tell me what the relationship between the Napa Daily Journal and the Napa Weekly Journal of the late 1890's was? Last summer I was able to go through the surname index for the old newspapers at the Napa City Library, but I did not have time to look at more than a couple articles on their micorfilm. Napa Library doesn't lend out the microfilm on ILL but they said that California State Library does. The State Library's web catalog didn't list any dates for the late 1890's for the Napa Daily Journal but did list a microfilm for 1890-1901 for the Napa Weekly Journal and listed the Napa Daily Journal as "other edition." Our librarian ordered it in May. It finally came and I have 11 rolls of microfilm (!!) to go through and none of the citations I have match. Was the Napa Weekly Journal completely different than the Napa Daily Journal? Did the Weekly print some of the articles of the Daily Journal? Was one paper for Napa City and the other for the surrounding area? Is there a system I can use to search these papers? (other than reading all the papers around the dates of my citations - which is my best option at this time). I can only have the film for 9 more days. I did receive the years 1890-1896 for the Napa Daily Journal but my family's citations for that period seemed to be in the Napa Register. The citations for 1897-1900 were all in the Napa Daily Journal and all I have on film is the Napa Weekly Journal. Help! I have close to 50 citations of direct importance and more of interest. -Sue Juneau, AK
