Hi: I'm new to the list and was wondering if there are databases online or in print anywhere about the employees of canal boats? Our family lore says: Sarah Curtis [who is the mother of my great grandfather, Nelson Albert Curtis] was a cook on one of the canal boats on the Ohio Canal. At night when the boats would tie up, Nelson would go play in the farmers' fields along the canal and would find Indian arrowheads. [There never was any mention of Nelson's dad, who from Nelson's death certificate I've determined to be Harlow Curtis; and from the 1900 Ohio federal census it says Harlow was born in Ct.] Nelson was born Aug 22, 1864 in Lancaster, Fairfield Co., Ohio, so the time frame I'm looking at would probably be around 1868, I would guess. Can anyone help? Nancy [email protected] http://www.ohioparks.net/countrystage
