    1. [CANAL-PEOPLE] Waterman/Canal Labourer
    2. Vivienne Simmons
    3. Hello All! I am intruding on this list in the hopes that some knowledgeable person will help/advise me. George DAY (b. about 1814 in Stratton St. Margaret, Wiltshire), was described as a waterman (in his son's marriage registration) and as a canal labourer. I have found George in Stratton St. Margaret in the 1851 and 1861 censuses, and have also found him (I THINK) in Swindon in 1871 and 1881. There are some confusing factors in the censuses so either they don't all relate to the same George, or George married three times, or the census taker made some mistakes. I am really keen to understand what I have. I am interested to know what George's job would have entailed and on what canal he would have worked. I would also like to know if there was a union or other body to which he might have belonged and, if so, if records of the organization are available? Or, if there are any other records, other than the parish records, which would throw some light on George and his family. I'd be very grateful for any information or directions. Thank you.
