On my gparents marriage cert. of 1906, my gfather's occup. is given as Boatman. His name is ENOCH SAXTON. They lived in the Handsworth district of Birmingham and I believe he worked on the Tipton Canal. I think he must have still been working at a boatman right up until he entered the army for WW1 as they had 4 children before 1914 and his occup given is the same.
