I am trying to trace a marriage between James Stokes and an Olive (either Slater or Cutler) around 1886ish. Olive Stokes was my Great Grandmother and before she married James Stokes she was married to a ? Slater and had one son, Samuel. She had six children with James Stokes, the youngest being my Grandfather, Arthur Stokes. On his birth certificate, however, her former name was shown as Cutler and not Slater as I had supposed. I have searched the St Catherine's indexes to no avail. I have found them on the 1891 census at Worcester Wharf, Birmingham. This shows Samuel to be aged 7, James aged 4 and Edward aged 2. (This is how I come to be looking around 1886 for the marriage) I am stuck for ideas here - can anyone suggest anyhting that might help? I am unable to go any further until I have resolved this puzzle. Many thanks, Kate Best
