Hello, I am afraid I haven't got much information to ask this question but I thought I would ask and see if anyone can help. My husband remembers being told by his father that one of his family used to go up and down the Aire and Calder canal to Goole and it was found that he had a still on board and made whiskey on his travels, when he got found out he was sent to prison, but we don't know his name , it could be Caswell but we don't know, we think it would be around the late 1800's early 1900's but it is only a guess. We wonder if there are any records that might show of anyone going to prison for making whiskey on a barge. We would be grateful if anyone has any ideas of where to look, and would anyone know the name of any newspapers around that area that may have written about it. Regards Eileen, Vic, Australia.
