Hello all canal-people, I have just joined your list and am looking for a little help from anyone who has a knowledge of the Erewash canal. I have discovered that my paternal grandfather and greatgrandfather were colliery agents and lived in one of the four cottages on the bank of the canal about 500 yards north of the roadbridge over the canal at Stanton Gate. My grandfather (George Hudson GOODWIN) lived there until 1893 when he and his new wife (no.2) moved to the lockeeper's house, called the Whitehouse, about 500 yards further north of the cottages. The address from 1891 was Canalside, Stanton by Dale. Before then there didn't seem to be a name except just Stanton by Dale. Since both my grandfather and his father claim to have been born in Stanton by Dale is it possible that they lived on the canal before moving to dry-land? My grandfather was born in 1840. Would anyone know when the four cottages were built and demolished? I think it must have been between 1779 and 1945. Would there be any records of the Whitehouse at Junction Lock? I don't think my grandfather was a lockeeper - perhaps the house was sold off as the Nutbrook canal fell into disuse by 1895. Any help with the history of this part of the canal would be greatly appreciated. The GOODWIN's moved from the Whitehouse in 1905/6 after my grandmother was found drowned in the canal one November morning. Regards, Bernard GOODWIN
