    1. [CANAL-PEOPLE] 1901 census Lancaster canal families
    2. My final postings on the 1901 census (at least until it comes on line!) are the Baines family. They were the main boat owners on the Lancaster canal until 1944 and my family the Ashcrofts crewed their boats and bought some from them after that date. Canal boat Kate 1901 Thomas Baines aged 23 from Preston. Wife Ann aged 20 and daughter Mary aged 9 months all from Preston. I have a list of the names of boats that they owned and again would welcome any connections for although they are not my ancestors, I am researching all the families that worked on the above canal for a book on canal life. 3. Janet, Regarding your connection with the BAINES family. My great grandfather was Aquila NEEDHAM. In the 1881 census he was listed as occupation: Captain of a barge age 34. Aquila died from pneumonia after falling off the barge into the Lancaster canal one Winter about 1884 two months before my grandmother Ann NEEDHAM was born. According to my father, Ann eventually took control of the barge business and had about seven barges which she eventually let her 'Cousin' take over by the name of Baines. I have only found one reference to a Baines that could be related - - VRI (FHL No. 1278808) - a William WALMSLEY married Margaret BAINES 20 May 1854, recorded in St Mary, Blackburn, Lancashire. Unfortunately, neither the husband nor wife's father is recorded. Hannah WALMSLEY was Ann's mother. My father reckoned that Ann was the first woman to take a canal barge through the Glasson dock from the Preston to Lancaster Canal through to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Aquila's parents were Robert NEEDHAM, boatman and Mary, they had three children, Aquila b. c. 1850, Samuel b. c. 1854 and Mary b. c. 1863. and that is all that I know about my NEEDHAM family. The Walmsley's were coal dealers. Any information that you may have regarding the Needham's and their connection with the Baines's would be much appreciated.
